Looking for Victorianus Fernandez travelling to/from/around UK, any help!?
« on: Saturday 12 December 15 20:02 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find any information referring to this guy? He moved around a lot and I'm struggling to find him in a census.

Victorian Fernandez, born in Goa (India)
Parents: Marian and Anna Marie Fernandez
Married: Ellen Crowe (b. 1836 Carlow, Ireland) on 1 Sep 1861 in Holy Cross Church, Liverpool
1871 census: Recorded as at sea
Children: Mary (b. 1863, Lancashire), Elizabeth (b.7 Jan 1869 Carlow, Ireland) and Sarah (1871 Lancashire)

It appears that the family had settled in Widnes, Lancashire for sometime from 1869

This may be in him in 1861 but I'm struggling to read his birthplace.
Ref RG09
Folio 36
Pg 13
Piece 677

NB: He has been recorded as Victorian, Victoriana, Victorians and Victorianus.

Thanks guys! Really stuck with this one!

I think the Victoria Fernandez in the 1861 Southampton census was from Malta. A man of this name is listed in the merchant seamen records, born Malta circa 1823.  A man of this name died in Capetown in September 1871, chief steward on the Natal, widow Annie, address in Bevois Mount, Southampton. (Deaths at sea and Probate records).

You're probably right, 1861 isn't him. Do you have any access to other records? Maybe something of him travelling around?
What about the 1871 census? He's recorded as "at sea" by his wife. Wouldn't his vessel be included in the census?

His birthplace is recorded here as Madeira (British Subject).

NB: He has been recorded as Victorian, Victoriana, Victorians and Victorianus.

I believe it is written Victorin in 1861; he was a Steward of Ship.

Madeira!? That's interesting.
I have a marriage record for Vict* Fernandez in 1861. On it, it says "Victorian Fernandez of Goa, India." Both Goa and Madeira were Portugese territories, and Fernandez is a name which seems to fit the bill.
Where do you suggest i go to try and find some more info to get to the bottom of this?

Thanks for your help so far!

For research advice for Madeira, with links to some online records, you might want to try this page ...

Perhaps also post on the Europe board, in case anyone has experience of these records and/or can read Portuguese?
