« on: Saturday 12 December 15 22:02 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information about the residence of Matthews in which Gerard Gatland lived between the years of 1577 and 1627.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat,
I know that the Gatland family lived at Pilstye, Cuckfield at that sort of time but did not know of the Matthews connection.  Really Haywards Heath hardly existed in those days.   Where did you find the information?

Thank you for your reply to my post. The reference to Matthews Mathewes) is found in the transcribed baptism of James Gatland, baptized 04 May 1606, son of Gerard Gatland and Annis. This reference is also mentioned in John Comber's book Sussex Genealogies - Ardingly

Hi,
If you look on http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
you will see a reference as below which may help place the estate.

Title:   Tenement called Gubridge (18a.) in Cuckfield, abutting W. on common called Haywards Heath; S. on lands called Petlands and Gubridge; E. on lands parcel of Oathale; and S. on lands called Matthews and Verrolls
Held by:   West Sussex Record Office, not available at The National Archives

Thank you for directing me to this archive. I don't have this one bookmarked in my go to places but have worked with the West Sussex Office in the past. You have given me a wonder Christmas present to explore.  :)

Oathall Road in HH is presumably where the estate for Oathale was and Petlands Road exists still too. You will find them on a modern map, fairlyu central in HH.   I can't place Verrolls or Gubridge.
A local historian, Colin Manton, has recently published a book on Haywards Heath.  He may be able to help you.  I will send you his email by personal message.
