If right brothers young Bernard died 1903 born circa 1860

They were all probably upping their ages as the pension had just come out.

Wow Dathai. Thank you. That news is fantastic. I remember my granny telling us how she signed for her Uncle Patrick. Would it be fair to assume that the children's ages are more or less correct?

Thank you Hallmark. I feel a bit more comfortable with my confusion now. I felt it was hard to get things sorted. Is there a method to use when trying to ascertain ages and dob's ? I suppose there are only best guesses and unknowns sometimes.

No method... remember a lot couldn't read/write so didn't know how old they were, plus many didn't trust the authorities and didn't give accurate information, even dates on g/stones can be wrong

Barney Mc Conway and Katie Wilson were my great great grandparents. They had at least 9 children born roughly between 1841 and 1862, the first 6 estimated date of birth, last 3 confirmed on Moville Parish records http://registers.nli.ie/parishes?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=Moville+%28Diocese+of+Derry%29
These records also confirms Katie Wilsons name.
