Newburn Parish Record/Bishops Transcript lookup please.
« on: Tuesday 15 December 15 16:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi There, I'm wondering if anyone can help me by looking up John Harris son of John and Eleanor christened 26th December, 1813 in Newburn to see if there is any information. His sister Mary Ann was christened there the year before and had some good information (though apparently it wasn't all readable) and I'm hoping he may too to help me find parents?

Thanks in advance,
Holly

Thanks Rosie,

Like Mary Ann's 1812 entry it seems to be missing from familysearch. I did look before. I'll go through them again but the dates skip.

Thanks again!

Thanks Jen that's where I picked it up. I was just wanting to see if there was more information. On his sisters baptism the year before (which isnt on free reg) they had the parents birthplaces and mothers maiden name. I just wanted to see if they did it on his or it had changed by then. Thanks again.

In 1813 the registers were changed to a standardised format and would almost certainly contain only the details shown on freeReg, ie. Date of baptism, child's name, parent's names, father's occupation, abode and name of the person carrying out the ceremony.

The entry for his sister was a Barrington era entry (1798 - 1812).

It's not - Rosie has given you the link to it  :)

By the way, this shows that freeReg got the abode wrong - it's Bellsclose not Beconhall  ::)

The entry for his sister was a Barrington era entry (1798 - 1812).

Just to add there was  the "Barrington period" in the local parish registers of Durham and Northumberland for the years 1798 - 1812  when the amount of information especially in baptisms, was given in great detail. It lasted until Rose's Act came into force on 1 January 1813 and put an end to it. The Bishop of Durham Shute Barrington was the man responsible for this.
By Rose's Act of 1812 (The Parochial Registers Act) parish incumbents were required to use specially printed registers, from and after the 31st December 1812. The act required detailed information to be recorded for baptisms. In addition to the name of the child and the date of the baptism Rose's Act also required the register to include the names of the parents, their abode, and the father's quality, trade or profession and the name of the officiating clergyman.

So the sister Mary Ann Harris born Lemington 4 Apr 1812 baptised 31 May is the second child and 1st daughter of John Harris native of Rackton ? Surrey and Eleanor Brown native of Simonburn [Simonburn is a really large in area parish]

Do you know when and where the first child was born or anything about that one?  For what it is worth the baptisms from the BT's of Newburn are only an abbreviation of what is really in the parish record. and couldn't find 1811 or 1812 either.
