White - Bolotwa - Queenstown
« on: Thursday 17 December 15 11:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Looking for info about Amelia White who died and in June 1884. She was in her 79th year according to newspaper report.

Her husband John George White lived on and probably died in same place - but when? Any assistance appreciated.

There are numerous John George White's at the archives :(

Could his dad/brother perhaps have been Robert James?  If so, there was a business called R. White & Sons operating somewhere in the Cape during 1904 when they sued someone.

Which newspaper did the report come from?

Hi

My friend found on the EGGSA website.

John George was born in 1805 so he probably died shortly after 1884. They came from Cheshire and Liverpool.

After I sent the previous post I decided to explore it further and found the newspaper cutting.  I then went back to the archives and have found three possible John's who died in 1892, 1901 and 1902.  Unfortunately only marriages are on line for St. John's Baptist Church of England, Tembu Location.

I also found a link to a site which gives two children born to Amelia and John - Isabel Maude and Kathleen - however neither of these was married to Charles!  The newspaper reports seem to indicate that they lived at the mission so logic says that John probably remained there after she died, but logic and what actually happened are often two totally different things!

This obviously requires some more searching  ::)

Here are the details of his death notice.  Unfortunately as it is at the Cape Archives it cannot be ordered through eggsa.  If you send me a pm with your email I shall send you the order form and the email address of the gentleman who works at the Archives.

Hi

Amelia and John George's daughter was Louisa - she married Mr Patten. Her duaghter married someone called Cassidy - the place Bethel is mentioned in a letter.

John George was a shipbroker/merchant in Liverpool. This might help identify hin in 1892?

Neither of those names were mentioned on the site I found.  Bethel is just outside Stutterheim which is about 110km from Queenstown.

Unfortunately I cannot find his death notice on line so it will have to be ordered from the archives.
