FLAMANK, Cornwall & All, All dates

Hi I have been researching the Flamank Family of Cornwall for some years and have much information on all branches of the family.

Little is  known of the origins of the name except that they probably originated as Flandrensis (Of Flanders) and they came with William The Conquerer. The main body in Boscarne Cornwall continued with name changes to the name Flamank. The most famous Flamank being Thomas Flamank of Bodmin a Lawyer whos father Sir Richard Flamank was Mayor of Cornwall and the Royal Cornwall Tax Collector and an estate owner. There was great poverty among the tin workers of Cornwall and when King Henry V11 imposed yet another tax on the people to rage his war against the Scotts the people who felt a war against the Scotts in the north had little to do with them and as resentment increased Michael Joseph (An Gof) a St Kerverne Blacksmith roused the village to rebellion. In Bodmin Thomas Flamank urged the people to protest . Thomas urged the people to march peacefully and carry their grievences to the king. They began to march to London without violence carrying only bows, pitchforks and simple weapons collecting supporters along the way. In Somerset Lord Audley took command of the army. By the time they reached Blackheath near London they were several thousand mainly armed only with pitchforks and homemade weapons. On June 17 1497 They were surrounded by the kings army of 10,000 men. The battle was soon over with 200 Cornishmen losing there lives. Thomas Flamank and Lord Audley were captured on the battlefield and Michael Joseph as he fled towards Grenwich. They were taken to the Tower of London. On 27 Jun 1494 Thomas Flamank and Joseph AnGof were taken to Tyburn where they were hung drawn and quartered. Parts of their bodies were hung all over london as a warning. Lord Audley was treated a little more humanely and beheaded the following day. An Gof before his execution is reported to have said he should have "a name perpetual and a fame permanant and immortal".

I have information from these early days to the present and would love to hear from others with connections to the Flamank family. I am presently trying to tie in different branches of the family with the main Boscarne line of the family and the Gonronson line which separated from the Boscarne line in the 1500s and moved its headquarters to the Summercourt area of St Enoder. I am extremely conversant with all lines of the family and would love to one day tie the unknown branches in with the main body of the Flamank family. Our own South Australian line stems from John Flamank who married Mary Andrew in St Columb Minor in 1817. Sadly I have not been able to locate his birth. Other Australian lines are sadly in the same position stemming from John Flamank who married Thomasin James in St Enoder in 1785. To date I have been unable to tie these families in with the Gonronson Flamanks but would love to do so.

Would love to hear from anybody with connections to any Flamank line. I should be able to help you and in the process maybe you can help me. Extensive material held on all Flamank lines.

My husband is the third great grandson of John Flamank and Mary Andrew.  I don't know if we have corresponded before on this line.  Their daughter, Elizabeth Flamank, married Francis Glasson and he is descended from her. Some of this part of the branch remains in Cornwall and many are in Canada.  Which is your line? We would love to have access to your information on the family.

I am an ancestor of John 1746 & Thomasin.  From what I have gathered there was a John 1791 who married Catherine Endean and who had James 1833 (not James Andrew) who married Elizabeth James and came to Australia and their daughter Amelia was my great grandmother.  Another source has told me that John 1746 is the son of John 1709 and Frances Ivey who in turn is the son of John 1638 and Elizabeth Pardew.  Does this sound right.

I have only been at this a short while so am still learning.

John FLAMANK = Thomasin JAMES was not the son of John FLAMANK and Frances IVEY. Your John FLAMANK is of unknown origin born about 1754. This is what we refer to as an orphan branch of the family. No found connection to the established branches of the family.

Hi Kris,

I know you posted this ages ago, but I've just found Flamank / Flamock in my ancestry.  What an interesting family.   I am descended from William b. abt 1576, son of William & Mary Carminow.  I haven't been able to find much about William, other than I think he matriculated from Cambridge in about 1596.  If you know any more about him, I'd be thrilled to hear it.

I realise that this was posted a long time ago, but as Flamank is a main line on my Family Tree, through Rev Henry Flamank, I am continually searching around.
Both myself and another "Flamank" from the same ancestry concluded that our branch was either an Orphan Branch or Illegitimate Branch, because we couldn`t trace back further than John Flamank & Thomasine James.

However I was clicking around the other day and came across transcripts from an early English Wales Newspaper dated in the 1800`s and it contained the following
"The REV. HENRY FLAMANK was of (or rather from) the Gonronson branch; and, as it has been stated, he was ejected from the living of Lanivet. He had been, previously, chaplain to the Governor of Pendennis Castle. In the Gentleman's Mag. Vol. 61, p. 919, there is a copy of a warrant, sent by Oliver Cromwell, for the appointment of Henry to the chaplaincy. Rev. ROGER FLAMANK, an elder brother, was, at the same time, ejected from the living of Sithney. He afterwards resided in St. Enoder. The last sermon that he preached was, it is said, from this text, (in reference to the sacrifices that he had made) "The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.""

This link to Cromwell was certainly news to me and even the Goronson branch...
Does anyone else have any further information.
