James Mitchell/ South Perrott Records
« on: Saturday 19 December 15 15:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have access to the South Perrott Birth records on-line. However, they only go to 1812 and earlier.  My ancestor, James Mitchell, was possibly born in South Perrott in about 1824. I am told that he then immigrated to Newfoundland. Does anyone have access to the birth/baptism records for this time period (1824) at South Perrott? Any and all help appreciated! :)
Greg

Welcome to Rootschat.
There is a James Mitchell baptised 19/12/1824 in Wimborne-baseborn son of Mary Mitchell.
On the DorsetOPC site for 1841 there are quite a lot of Mitchells living in South Perrott who may be relatives of James, although he is not there.
regards.

Thanks,
There is a possibility that this is the James Mitchell for whom I search.  However, I have a clue from this end (re- historical apprenticeship records) that he was born at South Perrott.  I have seen the census for South Perrott listing the Mitchells in 1841, but James was possibly in Newfoundland by then, so I really need to check the birth/baptisms at the church there.
I would appreciate it if anyone could get me in touch with a researcher near South Perrott.
Again - thanks so much.
Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg
Had a look at South Perrott and no luck,Did 1820-1826 baptisms manually and no James anything between those dates ,would you believe?
Here's the others
William and Sarah Mitchell (possibly nee Spearing)labourer SP-Mary 23.2.1817,Henry 22.7.1821-17.11.1892,Robert 3.8.1828-5.12.1830,Sarah Anne 26.9.1830,John 7.6.1833 and 10.101.1835,Robert 22.4.1838,William 13.8.1841-27.6.1851  and Henry 25.4.1847-30.6.1851
John and Jane Mitchel labourer SP-banns 24.7.1825 to Jane Saunders of Cheddington-Thomas 2.11.1828-18.12.1869
Thomas and Elizabeth -Edward 8.3.1829,Eliza 11.8.1833-3.12.1848,Mary Ann 24,4,1836-14.3.1847
Elizabeth spinster SP-Amelia 7.2.1836 and Emma 27.1.1839-1.3.1839
Mary spinster SP- Sarah 20.3.1842
That's all baptisms 1812-1851 on the index and all the marriages for a groom called Mitchell.
Burials
William1772-8.8.1837
John 1731-26.7.1820
Betty 1770-23.8.1859
John 1777-16.1.1833
Jane 25.6.1843
Elizabeth 1797-10.2.1839 (probably Thomas's wife)
Thomas 1800-4.1.1857
Mary Anne 1801-10.7.1867
Edwin 1827-21.4.1908 (it says Edwin but probably Edward bap 1829)
Jane 1829-30.5.1803
Eliza 1830-24.10.1901
Thomas infant 4.5.1852

It looks like there's one big family at South Perrot which as you know is a small parish.
To me James looks either the son of William and Sarah in the gap 1821-1828 or Thomas and Elizabeth before 1829.
They are brothers so it would be the same family.

Not sure when any research requests will be dealt with over the Christmas/New Year break but it might be worth sending a request.

Thanks so much to Ciderdrinker and Nanny Jan,
It seems as if,  either our James Mitchell was missed at South Perrott which I strongly doubt, or he was from elsewhere in England. His death record here in Newfoundland stated that he was 87 years old when he died in 1910, which brings his birth date to 1823.  From a census record here in Newfoundland in 1904, he is registered as being 79 years of age which makes his birth date at 1825.  I have been using the average of 1824, plus or minus two years.
It is very likely he came from Devon or Dorset to Newfoundland because he settled here with several 'friends from home' in the 1850's (I was told by my grandfather) with surnames like Stickley, Brockway and Batt.  Fortunately, two of these people stated in census materials that they were from "Dorchester"; perhaps that's where I need to search next.

Again, thanks so much for the help and from Newfoundland - a Very Merry Christmas to you all. :D
Cheers on Tibsy Eve.
Greg
