Looking for information on The Black Boy pub in Tib Street, about 1850.
« on: Sunday 20 December 15 14:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello. Just joined so not sure how to go about this.
My distant relatives Charles Harling and James Parker once owned or ran this pub.
Any information on Tib Street history would be appreciated.
I'm from Australia.

A very warm welcome to Rootschat.

At Middleton Agricultural Show Sept 1874, a "Charles Harling, Black Boy, Tib Street, Manchester" took 1st and 2nd prize in the "Black and Tan Terrier or female dog" category.

From the Manchester Courier and General Advertiser, 3 January 1876:

"Additional Arrivals - Mr Harling, Black Boy, Tib-Street, has Just Arrived in Manchester with upwards of 200 First-class German CANARIES, all in full song"

and he had 300 canaries for sale in 1874!
Manchester Courier and General Advertiser, 19 January 1874:
"Fresh arrival from Germany - 300 of the very best German Canaries, all in full song, to be seen daily at charles Harding's, Black Boy, Tib Street, Manchester."

I knew Tib St was famous for its pet shops when I was young (1960s) but I hadn't realised the association with livestock went back that far.

Charles Harling Publican 98 Tib Street 1871 census.  James Parker same address 1891 Beer house keeper.  There was for a time in the 1800s a minor licensing difference between a "beerhouse" and a "public house".
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the information, hanes teulu, Barbara H and max D.
I'm very grateful.
As far as I know, James Parker married Charles Harling's daughter Elizabeth.
From the dates it looks like James took over the running of the Black Boy.
Max D, was there more status in running a public house or a beer house, do you know?
I believe Charles was sentenced to a month in gaol for staging dog fights, and then I think ultimately James went bankrupt ( no wonder we ended up eventually in Australia) !
I wonder if anyone knows which gaol Charles may have ended up in? Around 1871.
Golly. Only an historian could answer that.

Thanks again for your information.

Good grief heywood!
Where do you find this stuff.
I've been looking for ages and just have mum's last memories to go on.

Thank you. That's wonderful.

There is some sort of mystery, I think.

1871 Charles is 44 yrs (b 1827) unmarried.

1861 Charles, 37 yrs, unmarried with parents Charles and Margaret.

1851 Margaret is married with some children but son Charles is missing

* some 1851 census pages are damaged/ destroyed.

1841 John and Margaret and children, including Charles.
