Dundas Welsh (1824 -1913) Mary Waldock (1835-1909) Scotland to Australia
« on: Sunday 20 December 15 17:57 GMT (UK) »

am trying to find the name and other details of the ship which brought Dundas Welsh (1824 - 1913) and his wife Mary Welsh, nee Waldock (1835 - 1909) from Scotland to Australia.

Dundas Welsh was born in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

Mary Waldock was born in Glasgow.

They were married in Australia in 1855. (Given their age difference and marriage in Australia, they may well have eloped). Mary Waldock would have been 20 when she married, so my guess would be they left Scotland in 1854 or 1855, possibly 1853.

I've had no luck finding their ship.

They married and died in Victoria so possibly they also arrived there.  Each state and territory in Australia has it's own BDM Registry.

You can search the Assisted and Unassisted Arrivals at the Public Record Office of Victoria.

Not much help but in his death notice in 1913 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article199443512 it says he was a colonist of 64 years.

Often need to investigate other records to identify Mary on the shipping records.  According to Mary's death registration, she was born c1837 so not 20 years of age when she married.  Do you have their marriage certificate?  Were either of them literate?

If he arrived Victoria as an unassisted immigrant in 1849 I doubt you will find his arrival.  No records for this period as it wasn't until 1852 that it was legislated for all passengers names to be recorded.  Indexes at PROV for unnassisted immigrants commence in 1852.

This  article may be of interest as it tells of the movements of Francis Lamb GRAHAM  immediately after his arrival. In Portland.

Of course we do not know whether young Mary WALDOCK stayed with the GRAHAMS after landing in VIC, but the information may come in handy for your files. ;) even if the dates are not quite correct.

Although I cannot find a birth, a four year old child of Dundas and Mary (WALDOCK) died in 1860 ( along with a two year old sister, both deaths being registered at the same time).

Sue I think that is a different Francis L GRAHAM.  He married  Mary Ann GIBBONS in 1858 and Helen HUME in 1870.  On the 1851 census he is living with his family in Cumberland, England and his occupation is shoemaker.  He died in 1912.

Francis GRAHAM and Mary ALLAN had a number of chn in Melbourne from 1853 to 1865.  This appears to be the birth of their dau Susan mentioned on the 1851 census. Francis was a barber on the 1851 census.

Birth

Birth    6 Mar 1850  Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Father Francis  Mother Mary ALLAN
GS Film number    0102922-23, 0994182, 102927, 1042941

Is this Christiana's birth.

Yes,
It does make a bit more sense as  now I properly read. The correct Francis GRAHAM was a barber not  bootmaker on the ship's list ;D
