EIGHTEEN family of Hadleigh & Reading
« on: Monday 21 December 15 21:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Curious to know if any of you have any members of the EIGHTEEN family in your trees. It's a fairly unique surname and so chances are they come from a branch of the same family.

The family originate in Hadleigh and Cosford in Suffolk, but during the mid-19th century many seem to have wandered over to Reading in Berkshire, which is where most of the surviving family seem to be based.

Thanks,

James  ;)
Eighteen -- Hadleigh, Suffolk; Reading, Berkshire

I am not related but FreeREG also has some Eighteen records in Norfolk
Earliest Burial 1764/Marriage 1740/Baptism 1750
http://www.freereg.org.uk/

Not sure how far you have gone back in Suffolk but they could have originated in Norfolk.

Trish :)

I did notice on the Marriage of Charles EIGHTEEN 27 Feb 1763 to Rose RUDLING there is a couple of notes;
Charles of Hellis Parish (have no idea where that is)
Transcriber Notes A Death Of A Charles AYTON And This May Be The Same Person**
Looked for this Burial;
Appears to be 25 Jan 1808, St Mary, Attleburgh, Widower, Charles Ayton age 65
Rosamund, Wife of Charles Ayton was buried 19 Apr 1769, St Mary, Burston

Only Child seems to be;
MARY Eighteen, 15 April 1769 to Charles/Rosamund

Very possible, Graham. I know they had a butcher's somewhere in Reading until not too long ago.

As for Ayton, Etienne, etc. Yes, there are numerous older variants used until the 19th century.
