Coe of Bocking
« on: Tuesday 22 December 15 16:48 GMT (UK) »
I've come across the name Ascellites Coe, wife of Thomas, who would have been married in about 1750. When I first saw it, I thought it was so bizarre that it had to be a mistake, but it occurs several times as they had six children (e.g. DP 268/1/3 094) although no birth or marriage record. I wondered if anyone knows the derivation of this name, as Google cannot help.

Geoff

Don't know what the name means but at son John's baptism (born feb 1749) she has her name spelled as Usherley.
Thomas Coe and Usherley Powlter marries 20 July 1744 Bocking. Both single and of parish.

Thanks, nannyj. I had come across Usherly Powlter but it didn't occur to me that she and Ascellites were one and the same...

I only found their son John ... Maybe they're not the same? However, didn't find any other Coes for the thirty years before or twenty years after in Bocking.

FreeREG has JOHN Coes Baptism 11 Mar 1749/50, St Mary the Virgin, Bocking
Birth 01 Feb 1745/46******
Fits well with the 1744 Marriage found by nannyj
Siblings;
All Baptised 28 Dec 1756
MARY,  Birth 09 Jun 1751
SARAH, Birth 11 June 1752
PATIENCE, Birth 18 Oct 1755
Then;
THOMAS, 27 May 1759 (3 April 1759)
CHARLES, 30 Nov 1761 (26 Oct 1761)
WILLIAM, 16 Oct 1768 (10 Oct 1768), Buried 1 Jan 1769 age 3mths

Burial, THOMAS Coe, 16 July 1777, age 54 (1723)

Ascelliter COE was a Witness to the Marriage of Thomas COE to Patience COE 14 Sept 1777
So she was still alive after Thomas died.
If in her 50's she may have remarried.

FreeREG also has a few POWTER Marriages a few years either side of Thomas/Usherley

Trish :)

Thanks, Trish - I was a bit bemused by the marriage of Thomas Coe and Patience Coe a while ago, when I (mistakenly) thought I was out on the wrong limb of my family tree. Must investigate further...

Can't find a birth record for Thomas around 1723.
