Morton Family of Ballymahon, Co Longford
« on: Wednesday 23 December 15 04:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My Morton family surname ended with Elizabeth Morton 1845-1899. She died in New Zealand but was born In Ballymahon, Co Longford. She married Robert Searight then Moore Ellis Mawhinney. I have a blog about the Searights but have finally decided to find out more about Elizabeths origins.

Her death certificate stated she was the daughter of Thomas Morton and Mary Fawcett. I do not think they were Catholics as none of the Morton family were. The certificate stated she was born in Ballymahon, Co Longford.

I have undertaken some searches on Find My Past plus Family Search so just have a jumble of names so far. There is a Thomas Morton who fits for the right age but its difficult to say this is her father as there appear to be multiple Morton families there related to each other.

Based on the record search above there is Thomas Morton 1815-1881 would have had more children than Elizabeth so hopefully more records come to light.

Thomas Morton born in 1815 died in 1881 in Ballymahon, Longford.
A Thomas Morton appears in the Griffiths Valuation living in Cloonkeen, Parish of Shrule, Longford. This is the same area as Ballymahon.

Mary Morton born 1815 and died in 1875. This is a good chance to be Thomas wife but at this stage is a good guess.
John Morton born 1801 and died 1864 in Ballymahon.
Joseph Morton born 1805 and died 21 October 1878. He was a reverend and married to Martha.
Thomas Morton born 1847-1851 in Co Longford married Joanna and is in the 1901 census
William Morton Born 1842 in Co Longford and married to Martha ?
William Morton - Tax assessment 1830 Taghshinny, Co Longford. Again this is 3 kilometres from Ballymahon. Not sure how he fits in here.
Joseph Morton - born 1786 and died 1882 in Ballymahon. Unless he started having kids at 14 years old hes not the father of John 1801-1864
John Morton married Anne Wallace. His father is listed as Thomas Morton. They marry in 1852 so perhaps an older brother for Eliza Morton giving a spread of birth ages of at least 15 years and more siblings to be found. Unless its a second marriage for the older John Morton - its difficult to say.

I found via a google search an Edward Morton born 1816 in Co Longford and who died in 1860 in India. I have contacted the descendants of Edward and they have shared information about his line but have nothing on any other lines or information prior to Edwards birth. They do not have his parish birth record either.

departed this life 20th February 1846 aged 70 years.

About 130 documents relating to the families of Pratt, Gardiner, Rolleston and Morton and their lands in Counties Meath and Westmeath but mainly in County Cavan - copies of documents, c. 1705-1847, prepared for use in the case of Rolleston v. Morton, 1845-7.

Dublin: National Library of Ireland, Ms. 11,450

You can email     jharte2   at   nli.ie    (remove spaces!)

who can give you a cost for these, shouldn't be very expensive.

Possibly another for your list?

Peter Henry Morton: born ca 1811, in possibly Toome, Taghashinny
Married: Harriett Gibson, in 1842, in Dublin.

RIC: joined in 1842. Resigned in 1849.

Emigrated to Ontario in 1849.

Sons John born in 1843 in Dublin and Henry in 1845, in Dublin. Possible
daughter in 1848 in Dublin.

Possible father , named John. Possible mother, named Mary. Possible
brother John, ca 1810, who was also in RIC.

Maybe try to make a spreadsheet of data?

Some 75% of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) were Catholic. The RIC were not very popular due in part to having to carry out evictions.
