Charles Pratt death 1871
« on: Wednesday 23 December 15 06:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm looking for any further information regarding the death of a Charles Pratt (possible ancestor).  I'm having trouble tracking my ancestor past the 1871 census which lists him as 17 years of age, living in Deptford.
The death details are -
Name - Charles Pratt
Died - Dec Qtr 1871 St Saviour Southwark
Age at death - 17
Any info regarding parents or address of death would be appreciated.  I would like more certainty that this is my ancestor before I purchase the certificate.

Yes this is the same person.  I have posted other queries relating to the Pratt/Goldspink family a few months ago on this forum however they are quite long so won't go into details.

Charles Pratt parents Aaron Pratt and Mary Pratt both died in Saint Saviours Southwark in 1869 and 1876 respectively which makes me think this person could be a possibility.  Charles sister Harriet is also found in the 1871 and 1881 census living around this area.

Yes, that is the family. As I haven't been able to track Charles in the 1881 census with certainty, I have started to look at deaths. This one in 1871 fits but was trying to avoid buying the certificate without further proof- it may be that I need to in the case just to rule it out!

Think that would be the best thing to do to see what it says

I have ordered the certificate, so lets hope it shows a link between family members.  I have since found a Charles Pratt aged 17 who died in the Newington Workhouse Southwark, so potentially could be the same person...

The death certificate for Charles Pratt states his occupation as tailor.  As he died in the workhouse there are no other clues to link him to this family.  I'm thinking it would be unusual for a son to come from a family of 'hawkers/travellers' that were not well off and probably couldn't read/write to then become a tailor? - I'm assuming some level of reading/education would have been needed for this job - any thoughts?
