Charles and John Smith
« on: Thursday 24 December 15 09:26 GMT (UK) »
Looking for the rest of the family for Charles Smith B Risby 1853 (Father) and John Smith B Risby 1893 (son)
Difficult I know being "Smith" but would like to be able to tie John into a family. Perhaps not relevant to this, but I will add that John was in 9th Btn Suffolk Reg WW1. might help !
Any help appreciated

Hi.

How do you know about Charles and John, and their dates etc, if you don't know about the rest of their family?  Do you have them on any census records?

Hi all it might lead to the whereabouts of John in 1901 if the wife of Charles in 1891 an Emily b c 1859 Bury St Edmunds can be located,  John is with Charles in last census.

From looking at census and BMD's it looks as if Charles Smith was born Mar.1853 Thingoe, Suffolk - he marries an Emily Lyes Dec.1882 Thingoe - 1891 census shows children as Willie 12 b.Bury St Edmunds, Lucy 7, Annie 3 and Edward 1 all born Risby.   'Willie' born prior to marriage as William Smith Lyes Dec.qtr.1878 Bury St. Edmunds.

I'm wondering if the 'M' for married against Charles in 1901 is an error as an Emily Smith died in 1898 Thingoe district and son John is living as a 'Boarder' in Bromley, London although back with widowed father 10 years later.

Charles appears to be the son of Robert Smith (bc.1805 Risby) and Susan Arnold who married 29/6/1827 Risby.  Think Robert died either 1852 or 1861 and Susan in 1859 as Charles with his elder brother George in 1861 and 1871.

Sorry for no specific sources but have got to go out now - info discovered from census and familysearch.

annette and keyboard

You have got it,all falls into place now.  This is indeed him.
Very interested in the Lyes family also, thanks.
As an aside, it is very strange why so many folk from this area ended up in Bromley at that particular time!
I am really grateful for all the help, many many thanks
