Will of William Gibson died Oakham 1809
« on: Sunday 27 December 15 20:05 GMT (UK) »
I'm completely out of my depth as to where to look for this so would appreciate any pointers.

15 Feb 1809, William GIBSON, Oakham, Will
Consistory Court of Peterborough: Wills, Administrations and inventories
Northamptonshire and Rutland Probate Index

Within the index to death duty registers for the 1809 Peterborough Archdeaconry Court there is a William Gibson transcribed as Barham, but looking at the image I think it may be Oakam.

Ive then tried looking at the Northamptonshire Archives site but didn't find it easy to navigate.  It looks like they don't have any Consistory Court of Peterborough wills for 1809?

Help!

Hi Jomot
I see what you mean!

Not easy to find where this will might be.

The Northamptonshire Record Office has a pdf file

Information leaflet.
Wills and probate documents at
Northamptonshire Record Office

on http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/en/councilservices/Community/archives/Documents/PDF%20Documents/Wills%20and%20probate%20A4.pdf

which then says;

Records of the Consistory Court of Peterborough
 Wills: 1541 - 1858. These are available on microfilm for the periods 1541 - 1646 and 1820 – 1858
 Administrations and Inventories: 1570 - 1858

I think this sounds as if it is just an index and not the actual wills, (and unfortunately 1809 is missing!), as later on it says

We do not hold the wills proved in the various Peculiar Courts of the Diocese. However we do have microfilm copies (M 132 and 133) and a guide to their whereabouts.

If it was me I'd be giving them a ring and asking for help - I've always found Record Office staff very helpful at other offices.

Might have to wait a day or two depending on when they reopen after Chistmas! ;)

Ah ha. My mistake.
It looks as if the microfilms are of the actual wills - see

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714856.0

that still doesn't get over your problem that 1809 would seem to be missing.  :-\
Still a phone call I think to clear it up.

If NRO does not have the will you can order the microfilm at your nearest Family History Centre
Here is the reference
Original wills 1809-1811
Family History Library
British Film
174908
Have the film sent to your local family history center

Or try Peterborough Libraries

Thank you both for your help.

I will try the records office after the holidays.  Failing that either the LDS film or TNA, as referenced on the LDS record.

Considering how useful wills can be, they don't make them easy to find, do they  ???

Not easy to find in your neck of the woods it would seem!
Yes they are incredibly useful - I've been very lucky - Cheshire ones are now on FindMyPast, and Lichfield have had ones for Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Shropshire indexed online (well, up to 1770) on their Record Office site, for a long time now - only because a Volunteer Group have set to and indexed them though.

Good luck!  :)

Gosh well done Bunny girl! :)
Did you find it?
For future reference it would be useful to know where it is! (and how you found it) - just in case a similar thing happens.  ::)
