First name Ludovici.
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 12:42 GMT (UK) »
In an 18th century Aberffraw baptism record that I am looking at it shows the parents names as Ludovici and Anna Owen.

I realise that the first names are in Latin and Anna translates to Ann but can only find the name Ludovici used as a surname, does anyone know what it would translate to when used as a forename?

Most likely Lewis or Louis.

Thank you both for your replies.

I have settled for 'Lewis' as this would appear to be the Welsh version of Ludovici.

One of the URL links that Berlin-Bob posted was particularly useful as in the Ludovici history description it included the following:-

"In Wales, Lewis is used as an Anglicization of the Old Welsh name Llywelyn".

Just to confirm the above. Lewis as a first name can be either Ludovicus or Ludovici.

The attached image shows one used in the register and the other on same person's memorial.

Thank you David for posting the image that was most helpful.

If I conduct searches using both versions of the name I might find details relating to Ludovici Owen.

Just to confirm the above. Lewis as a first name can be either Ludovicus or Ludovici.
Just to clarify, the Latin form of the name is correctly Ludovicus. They are not alternatives!

The form Ludovici is genitive/possessive, and means 'of Ludovicus/Lewis'. This form would be used for recording children's baptisms (e.g. 'son of Lewis') or in a monumental inscription (e.g. 'sacred to the memory of Lewis').
