Unfamiliar Nursing Homes and Harpur Street Address
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 18:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am fairly familiar with Bedford but I have come across a couple of relatives born in two different nursing homes in Bedford which I have not heard of or been able to find any information about. They are;

Cheltondale Nursing Home, Bedford (1948)
Rena Nursing Home, Bedford (1944)

On completely separate matter, would anyone know what 29 Harpur Street, Bedford, MK40 1LA was in February 1938? Today, Bar Citrus is on the site and I suspect some kind of Pub/Hotel/Inn was also there in 1938 but I'm not sure.

Many thanks,

jcope.

Hi,

There is a probate record (1981) with an address of Cheltondale Nursing Home, 82-84 Castle Road, Bedford.

It would appear that they are private homes now.

From the 1938 Bedford Directory.......

...... 29 Harpur Street was The Stanley Arms public house, proprietor Francis Leopold Carthew

..... same year at 84 Castle Road was a nursing home run by Miss Adelia Covington, which in 1947 Kellys was named Cheltondale Nursing Home where Miss A Covington was principal.

Also in 1947 Rena Nursing Home Ltd was at 24&26 De Parys Avenue.

** later ** If you search through the Bedfordshire Times newspaper via FindMyPast or BNA you can find references to 14 birth notices between Apr 1945 & Aug 1948 at Cheltondale Nursing Home and over 480 similar birth notices at Rena Nursing Home between June 1939 & June 1952. You will need a subscription (or purchase credits) to either FindMyPast or BNA in order to view more detail of any entry.

Hello,

Thank you both JJen and johnP for your help.

It is interesting to know where those nursing homes were.

Yes, it was Mr Carthew that I was interested in so it's great to have that link to The Stanley Arms. It appears The Stanley Arms was still going up until the mid 1990's but it doesn't appear in the Council's list of Bedford Pubs for some reason;

Thank you John, I was also interested as to where it was.  I had already found a newspaper announcement for the person I was interested in.  ;D
