Hi All,

I hope someone can help me on the 1851 Census lookup please.

I recently ordered the marriage certificate of Alexander Smith & Jane Kendrew in 1869 in Scarborough, Alex's residence at time of marriage is EDINBURGH.

it states his father named the late Alexander Smith profession a gardener, just the same as his son.

The son Alexander Smith born abt 1845 Forres, Morayshire.

Regards

You can look up the 1851 of Forres and Edinburgh, and the 1861 of Forres, for yourself, free of charge, at www.freecen.org.uk

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Forfarian,

Thanks for the link, i've looked there so many times, but i can't see anything what sticks out.

Its like he's disappeared, fingers cross i'm hoping some of the pages aren't missing on the 1851 Scotland Census.

Kind Regards

Its like he's disappeared, fingers cross i'm hoping some of the pages aren't missing on the 1851 Scotland Census.

According to Ancestry - these are the known problem areas with the 1851 Scotland census:

Parish 93: Inverallan, County Inverness
Parish 152: Enzie, County Banff
Parish 167: Seafield, County Banff
Parish 509: Cumlodden, County Argyll
Parish 559: Abbey (Paisley), County Renfrew
Parish 862: Corsock Bridge, County Kirkcudbright

But I must say, I've had problems with the 1851 data for larger towns - like Glasgow or Aberdeen, for example - it may just be that it was easier for households to be missed, or not at home in built up areas - or it's just that finding people is harder, because there are more similar names/families/occupations in one area...

Who witnessed their marriage? Were they related?

I don't know if there may be a connection here posting because of name & occupation

Hi Ruth & Ladyhawk,

On the marriage certificate, a witness is Frederick Kendrew family of the bride,

As ev thankfully pointed out to me on the 1861 Scotland Census i have found my Alexr Smith 16yrs born abt 1845 Forres, Morayshire, sharing a room with William Lois, they are both Apprentice Gardeners.

So i'll keep searching, and hopefully something turns up.

Yes I saw the 1861 census as posted by ev for Alexander born 1845

The 1861 census detail I posted was a possibility for his father who you mentioned is also named
Alexander Smith his occ. Gardener

Unfortunately I couldn't find an
Alexdander Smith born 1808  Kettins Forfar occ Gardener,
wife Jane born 1807 with a
son named Alexander born c1845 Forres
on the 1851 census to confirm if this couple might be his  parents

Just to note , libindx has -

NM132998
Alexander Smith , gardener , Ann Ralph Forres , marriage 29th Jan. 1841 , Elgin Episcopal Chapel.

Think Forres is the placename rather than Ann's surname  :-\
