Did the baptism record mention his parents? Or at least his father's forename.

There's a marriage of Richard DAY to a Susannah STAGG  (could be shortened to Hannah?) at St Catherine, Montacute 24 April 1742. Got this from Free Reg http://www.freereg.org.uk/

It doesn't answer your question but this John may not have lived long, as Richard and Hannah appear to have baptised another son called John in Axbridge on 30th October 1751.

FreeREG shows the 1746 John as the son of James and Elizabeth, the 1751 John as the son of Richard and Hannah.

It also shows a Richard Day of East Brent (not far from Axbridge) married Hannah Howell of Wraxall at Bridgwater in 1746. They appear to have baptised several children at East Brent, before and after 1751, but with a gap just big enough for the 1751 John at Axbridge to also be theirs.
