Thomas Burgess c1844. Northwich.
« on: Friday 01 January 16 19:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi all.

I have been battling this brickwall for my 2x Grandfather for a good few years now, so I'm giving it another bash.

Thomas Burgess (c1844. Northwich), married Mary Ann Graham, 17th Feb 1867 @ St Margarets, Dunham Massey.   Fathers name is Joseph Murry.  Witness - James Hamnett & Ann Pimlott.

From 1861(in Runcorn) to 1891(in Altrincham) he gives Northwich as pob. In 1901 he gives Witton, Cheshire. (Witton cum Twambrookes. ??).

He dies in 1910. Bucklow reg dist.  Buried - 28 June 1910 @ Bowden parish church.

I have exhausted all the birth certs from 1842 to 1846/7 for him, and the only one that makes any sense is as follows.

Details from birth cert:
Born, 6 Oct 1845. at Sutton.  Thomas, boy. Mother, Sarah Burgess.    Informant, Elizabeth Burgess, occupier Sutton.   Registered 31st Oct 1845.  Runcorn, County of Chester.  J.Buckley(registrar).  (No father mentioned on cert).

I have not been able to find him in the 1851 census.

But, a possible sighting in 1851, with a William Burgess c1792. Davenham, Cheshire. & Elizabeth Burgess c1791. Bartington, Cheshire, and a grandson, Henry Burgess c1846. Marton, Cheshire.
Also in the house are Sarah Burgess c1831. Marton, Cheshire, and Joseph Burgess c1831. Marton.

There is a baptism for Thomas Burgess, 16 Nov 1845 in Aston-by-Sutton, Cheshire.  Mother is Sarah Burgess, in IGI.  which fits the birth cert.

Is there any other 1851 census ideas that you Cheshire experts can help with...........pleeeeease. :)

I've bashed away at all possible leads for the last 5 years, and still no luck.  I have a pile of certs that I keep revisiting, just in case.
This man has cost me more in certs and look ups than all my other relations put together, and it's getting to the point that he does not want to be found, and I'm at the point of giving up on him.

I have marriage certs for Sarah Burgess, Joseph Murry/Murray, but still nothing that lines up in the census.   It's also possible he was missed from census, or that part of the census is missing, damaged or destroyed.

I do believe he was Illegitimate, with a fathers surname of Murry on the marriage cert, and that's about it.

Oh well, onwards and backwards. ;)

Over 18 months on, I'm sure I've solved it. ;D

1851 Census.

Thomas Burgess. c1786, Dutton, Cheshire.
Thomas Burgess c1847, Sutton, Cheshire. Grandson

Plus other family members.

R.D. Runcorn.
Sub R.D. Budworth.

Mother of Thomas,........ Sarah Burgess, marries Richard Barrow, 1848, Daresbury, Cheshire.

So the baptism was correct, just the p.o.b was the problem.  I guess she was 'sent away', as was the case in those days.

Thanks Trish. :)

I had a similar problem with my paternal line, but that only took 3 years to solve. ;D

I think Thomas Burgess was last of my major brick walls, for direct ancestors.  I just need to chip away those smaller ones. ;)
