Frederick and Elizabeth's son I think was Frederick William Bates, b 1899 Ashbourne District. There is a burial in Ashbourne St Oswald for him in 1919 aged 20 and it looks like his mother Elizabeth Ann is buried there too in 1940, aged 63 years - here are the MIs for them

Spot on, I think  ;D 15 May 1898

Frederick Bates, 27 - Baker, father Thomas - Potter
Elizabeth Ann Johnson - 20, father Brittain - Collier

Witnesses - William Henry and Minnie Johnson

The marriage record in Familysearch records Elizabeth Ann's father as Brittain Johnson. A search on the 1881 census for Brittain Johnson has a daughter born 1877 in Hanley called Lucy A Johnson. i wonder if Lucy A is the same as Elizabeth Anne. Can we confirm this in the 1891 census?

Thanks

1891 census is also on Familysearch - try looking for Minnie Johnson, born 1881 with mother Hannah.  Brittain has died by this time (December quarter 1885 aged 39), but there is a 5 year old Brittain in the household.  Lucy A is now Elizabeth A.
