Deer Dyke near Kirkintilloch.
« on: Saturday 02 January 16 04:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi team

My gr gr gr gr grandfather William Roberts was a toll keeper of Badenheath on the 1841 census and toll keeper of Deer Dyke on the 1851 census.  What exactly is Deer Dyke?!  I see on Google Maps there is a Deerdykes Rd near Badenheath farm.  Has it got something to with Luggie Water?!  He was possibly a worker at Gartshore in later life.

Cheers, bitzar.

This looks Deer Dykes near Badenheath Farm on an 1859 map adjacent to the Badenheath Turnpike http://maps.nls.uk/view/74426627#zoom=5&lat=4361&lon=9447&layers=BT  Looks like a house name

More clearly labeled on the 1914 map http://maps.nls.uk/view/75650196#zoom=5&lat=1607&lon=4969&layers=BT

Well if your ancestor was the toll keeper he would have lived in what is now known as Deerdykes Cottage on the west side of the Mollins Rd at the Badenheath Farm road.  The toll was for crossing the My Lords Bridge to the south.  All these lands were held by the Fleming family of Cumbernauld and if you wanted to cross the Luggie onto Fleming land and use his bridge or his roads you paid a toll.

Thanks, so interesting.

Kay99, I noticed on the map 'Laigh Hole'  The family also lived here later on.

DonM, So Deerdkyes Cottage would of been owned by Fleming and rent paid to him by the tenant, his employee?!

Regards, bitzar.
