My grandmother was living in Edinburgh.

Ah......that now makes sense to me!!!

Scotlands National Probate Record
David Campbell engineer's fitter Freuchie ,Pte A S C died 18 August 1917 at No . 53 Casualty Clearing Station France ,intestate . Confirmation granted at Cupar 5 February to Elizabeth Murdoch Campbell East End Freuchie his sister executrix dative next of kin .Value of estate £ 2225.14s.5d

That has to be your David.
Now you need to find his birth in St. Rollox

his army records are on Ancestry
U K  Soldiers died in the great war
David Campbell birth place St Rollox Glasgow
Residence Freuchie Fifeshire
Death date 18th August 1917
France & Flanders
Enlisted London

Army records David Campbell age 22 motor driver
Army Service Corps
Regiment number 021106
died 18th August 1917
Wounds received in action
Next of kin his sister Elizabeth Campbell East End Freuchie Fifeshire

His sister Elizabeth should be easy to find as she has the middle name of Murdoch & sister Barbara too with middle name Wood.

just checked the army records again and this Barbara Wood Campbell is mentioned as another sister also a Andrew half brother address unknown  :)

Thank you so much for all this. I am finding that it's very addictive all this!! I am actually on a real roll now thanks so all you kind people. I looked at other family trees on Ancestry and found a Campbell/Murdoch one which lead me to Barbara Wood Campbell's grandaughter who I have messaged and she has come back! It's going to be difficult to find the real reason for me looking, which is why my grandmother was abandoned by David's family, if she was engaged to him, and why she thought he died after the armistice was signed.
I have tracked down the Bruce family that David was staying with in Freuchie after he enlisted. His aunt Isabella Campbell married a David Bruce in 1886 who died in Freuchie in 1909. But I can't see a sister called Elizabeth who Rosie says was his next of kin. Why not his parents? I can't find David and Isabella Bruce on the 1911 census living in Freuchie, only a couple of the same name living in Dunfermline with a baby daughter Elizabeth but the ages don't tally.

Eileen,

You won't find David Bruce in 1911 as he died 1909

It is possible that Elizabeth hadn't yet moved to Freuchie by 1911.

Could the family be in Edinburgh by 1911 where David was in 1914 where he met your gran?

Reference for David Campbell shows he was working for The Scottish Motor Traction Company
Edinburgh dated 18 November 1914

Rosie found the Probate Record for David where Elizabeth Murdoch was mentioned.

His Testament (5 pages) is available to download from the free Index of Wills & Testaments for 10 credits = £2.30 on scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Eileen,

Have you searched for David's parents deaths?

They may have died prior to his own death, so named his elder sister as next of kin?

Yes - silly me - I did know that David Bruce died in 1909 so no, he wouldn't be on a 1911 census! I looked at the testament and David's address after being in Freuchie was 131 Morrison St in Edinburgh so that's maybe how he met my Gran.
Can that Elizabeth Murdoch Campbell really be his sister - born 10 months before him (that's certainly possible) but both parents' names wrong?

You need to check the census for 1911

Will state where Annie was born too so can then look to see if she had a sis Agnes possibly married to a brother of Andrew or even check for a marriage for George & Agnes?
