Printer Compositer - Charles FULKES Stoke Poges Bucks
« on: Sunday 27 December 15 10:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi All, My Great Great  Grandfather Charles FULKES born 1827 Stoke Poges Bucks. He married Charlotte Gammage in 1950 Peascod Street Windsor, on his marriage cert it states he was a Printer Compositor, living Windsor, 1851to 1856 printer compositor, living 18 hall Place Paddington. Then I have no information on him till 1871 where he is Overseer to a letter Press printer living 7 Grafton Place St Pancras Marylebone. 1879 (year he died) he was a Printers Manager.
Ok What I would like to know is:
Would he have served as a apprentice

At that time he would have served a 7 year apprenticeship starting at age 14.

These records are not, from recollection, online. It is necessary to visit or know someone at Warwick U.

Hi Diana, I think that Charles Fulkes is also my Great Great Grandfather. My mum, who I was with earlier this week, has a few old books & in one of them, handwritten in the frontispiece pages, it quotes "7 Grafton Place, Euston Square" & a message something like "to Alfred C Fulkes on his 18th birthday from his father, may God's blessing be with you, September 1876". Alfred being born in 1858 would tie in with Charles being born in 1827. There is also another book from Charles to Alfred which has a handwritten message dated June 1868 when he would have been 9/10. My paternal Grandmother was born Mabel (Mable) Blanche Fulkes, (DOB 25/12/1894, died 1987), who I assume was the daughter of Alfred. I know she had a brother named Horace. Mabel married William Millard in 1921 & my dad, Ronald Millard was born in 1924 (died 2009).  I know that they originally lived in London & my Grandmother (Mabel) moved with her family to St Albans in circa 1902 & lived there until her death. I still live in St Albans.  When I am next with my mum (she lives in Cheshire), I will take copies of the information. I hope this is useful information for you.
