Newcastle upon Tyne Churches Completed with thanks
« on: Tuesday 05 January 16 04:53 GMT (UK) »
I am attempting to obtain a copy of a marriage register from a Newcastle church.

I have, from FreeReg the fact that the wedding i am after, for Robert Bewick to Elizabeth Bater occured on 6 June 1830 at St John the Baptist at Newcastle upon Tyne. However, when I look at the Parish Registers on Family Search, at the St John, Newcastle upon Tyne registers, I cannot find the entry.

Could there be two St John's?
Is it possible that St John the Baptist is Catholic? In view of family history, I would find this very unlikely, as they tended to be Non Conformists, but am willing to be corrected.

Any assistance would be very gratefully accepted to solve this mystery.

The marriage comes up in my transcript of Northumberland marriages.  The BT's are not without errors.  My guess is the entry was missed or a page missing from the transcripts.

Hi

The image is on Familysearch but is not indexed.

From the link below select Browse through 106,352 images.
Then Select Northumberland
Then Select Newcastle upon Tyne, St John
Then Select 1821 - 1830
Then go to Image 630
It is top marriage right hand page.

Thank you both for the help.

Andy, I simply could not see that one, and I thought I had looked at all the pages for the period. I had also enlarged the pages, but simply did not see it.

Many thanks for your help. I will simply have to take more time and care in the future :-[ :-[

Hi, Although not directly related to the above post. George Bewick (1746-1797) is my 6th great uncle.  His parents George Bewick (1688-1765) and Mary Curry (1695-) are my 6th Great Grand Parents.

I noticed post from you in 20111 where you were trying to confirm George's birth.  Did you ever confirm a date?  I would love to correspond with you regarding the Bewick family.

Regards

Peter, George Bewick (1746-1797) I have his birth as 19 Jan 1746 at Gateshead.

It is his father George Bewick (abt 1723-1805) that I have not sorted out which of several births is the correct one. The most likely one is 1721 at Newcastle, with parents George and Mary (Curry)

This George was born 1688 according to IGI, and he married Mary 1715.

I have not followed this branch for a while, due to following other branches.

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I do have the 19th of Jan 1746 as George's Baptism date so I guess his birth date would be a few days earlier?

I have a baptism Record for a George Bewicke from the LDS Family Search that has a date of 14 March 1725 at St Andrew's, Newcastle upon Tyne (parents George Bewicke and Mrs Mary Bewick).

I also have George Bewick 1688-1765ish and Mary Curry's marriage 21 Aug 1715 at Heartburn, Northumberland.  We are defiantly working on the same family. What is the relationship between you and George Bewick (1688).  Are you in Aust?....Regards...Peter Buckley

Peter, George Bewick, (1688) and wife Mary are my 6x ggparents.

George Bewick (1720’s to 1805) I have three contenders for his birth.

1721, baptised St Andrews to George and Mary.
1725, baptised St Andrews to George, no mother noted.
1726, baptised St Andrews to George, no mother noted.
All from Family Search.

Ancestry has:
1721, baptised St Andrews to George and Mary.
1725, baptised St Andrews to George, no mother noted.

I have not managed to find any siblings for him as yet, but will now start looking with your mention of a possible brother.

Do you have the name of your 5xggfather, so that I can find Georges siblings.

I am in Australia, Sydney.

Hi again,  My 5th great grandmother was George Bewick and Jane Wilkinson's daughter Mary Bewick, from Gateshead. B: Dec? 1750 - 1824. She married Henry Barras in Chester le Street in March 1768. Mary Bewick died in March 1824 in Breckon Hill, Chester le Street.  She is buried in the church yard of St. Mary and St. Cuthbert's Church, in Chester le Street.

As for George Bewick 1720s - 1805.  I have the 14 Mar 1725 down as the Baptism date and 1723 as his birth date (not sure where I got that date from).  This does not necessarily mean he was born in 1725 I guess...This FamilySearch record does have George's Parents as George Bewicke and Mary Bewicke.  The siblings I have for this George Bewick are Elizabeth B: 1718. Thomas B: 1723. Jane B: 1728 Christopher B: 1729-1729 and Mary B: 1731.  Hope this helps.

I guess we are related.  4th or 5th cousins?  I am in Canberra.  Keep in touch.
