Thank you, LizzieL you've given me a few ideas that hadn't occurred to me. In all rate book records in Melbourne he was a bootmaker and his wife ended up becoming a milliner.

I’m also finding out our heritage (Lavinia name has been passed down as a middle name to my mother and great grandmother) with James Slape Williams a mystery man. Something came up when I went through birth certificates for all the children. Bertha has the father listed in Victorian office as ‘Wm Jas Slape Skinner’ just to add confusion as to what surname to search for I’m checking Skinner now! I’ve attached a picture of the details I’m referring too. I’ll keep watching your updates for more news!

It is best to use the Registry's website for searching as Ancestry has a large number of mistranscriptions and sometimes they just make things up.
