1939 record: Secretary, Ltd Company
« on: Tuesday 05 January 16 07:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Hoping someone can help.

I have a male relative on the 1939 records listed as a : Secretary, Ltd Company.

Would this mean he was a director/owner of a company back in 1939? If so is it possible to find out what company?

thanks

No he would be responsible for ensuring that the company complied with standard financial and legal practice.

Thanks for your help. Is there any way to find out what company he worked for back in '39?

Usually, the Company Secretary would also be a director of the company,  but not always.

Thanks, do you know if its possible to find out the company? His wife who died in '68 was also listed as a Company Secretary as her occupation.

You could try the London Gazette to see if his name has been listed there

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-notices/notice

but I would imagine there are a lot of Harold Webb's

It seems possible that his wife took over the task of company secretary when her husband died, even tho she was a fair age then, this makes me think this was a family business, father and sons, maybe even grandfather founded it,

Maybe someone has access to trade directories from west brom. Look for a company with Webb in its name, or even maybe it was phoebes father who started it, so under his name.

Making phoebe the company secretary would enable the company to pay a wage/pension to mum in a tax efficient way

Mike

Added, there are 89 defunct companies with Webb in the name listed on the national archives site
