It looks as though Frances was treated as an alien during WW2, despite being British-born.  This suggests her husband was foreign-born.  Do you know anything about this?

We understand that her husband, Charles Ponson, was born in Germany and came over to Hull with his father Henry from Hamburg in 1865 just after he was born. I have access to worldwide searches, but not found anything about Henry or Charles. By the way "Fanny" Lee was correct thank you.

I did thanks. Frances died in April 1945 and Charles in Dec 1945. Not sure why Charles did not make any comment but he may have been restricted by the Home Office being German.

Thanks for that. However we cannot trace Charles Ponson in the National Archive records being treated as an alien, yet we know he was. Any idea where he could be traced?

Did you know that Charles Ponson saved his elderly neighbours from being gassed in June 1932 at Glencoe Avenue, Flinton Street?

No, but my brother in law may have heard about it, as he a direct descendant and born in 1942. I assume all this info is also from the Hull Daily Mail.

Charles and Maria Ponson are my great grandparents, the parents of my Granny May. My father is also Eric Powley. I was actually born at 1 Welbeck Ave in 1957.

Welcome to Rootschat eric Powley.

The original poster Mike Miller hasn't been on here since 2018 so hopefully has the same email to see your reply.

I presume you know that Charles wasn't interred and exemption cert is on Anc. + Frances as well.

Charles and Frances are on the 1939 Register together.

trish :)
