Wantage PR 1850-1930
« on: Wednesday 06 January 16 23:01 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to check the parish registers of Wantage for some christenings and burials between 1850 and 1930ish?

I am looking for the following:

Christenings
Harriett Ann Honey c1855 - dau of George and Jane
Robert Honey c1856 - son of George and Jane
Charles Honey c 1861 - son of George and Ann
William Honey c1863 - son of George and Ann
Thomas Honey c1864 - son of George and Ann
Mary Ann Honey - born 23 July 1866 - dau of George and Ann
Albert Honey c1870 - son of George and Ann
Louisa Honey c1873 - dau of George and Ann

George was also known as George Christopher Honey (his full name as given on his own death certificate and also on Mary Ann's marriage certificate)

Burials

Any Honey burials between 1851-1931

Thanks

Matthew

Hi there

Yes it's the same George in both. He married Ann Bowles in Oxford in 1860. I have both his marriage certificates and have him and all the children on the census returns. I just noticed today that I don't have the dates of christening for all the children or burial dates for anyone (even though I know what years some of them died).

Hope that makes sense

Matt

Many thanks for those. I had a couple of them already and know the dates of birth for almost all of them so this helps fill in a few gaps.

Best Wishes

I have two newspaper reports of petty crime carried out by some relatives of mine (as children) in Wantage. In both cases a child with the surname Honey was their co-accused.
George Honey was accused with Tom and Mary Eltham of stealing 25 walnuts in October 1866
(Tom would be 10 and Mary 14 at the time)
and
Thomas Honey and James Eltham were accused of placing an obstruction on the Wantage tramway in October 1875. (James would be 13 at the time)

there is also a report of an Ann Honey being co-accused with  Elizabeth Eltham for stealing two bundles of rape plants - April 1869. Elizabeth was mother of the three children mentioned earlier and would be in her late forties.

Are any of these connected to your family?

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

I've just found another one involving an assault on a police constable involving Philip Eltham, James Eltham, Elizabeth Eltham and Ann Honey (widow). Ann Honey was fined 10 shillings, Elizabeth Eltham was fined £1. The date was Nov 1877.

She could be widow of your George if he died in 1875

There's another newspaper report about the inquest of death of Louisa Honey's illegitimate son
(21 Mar 1895 William Charles Thomas Honey buried 21 Mar 1895 age 9mths).
It mentions that Ann Honey lived in Grove Street which was the same raod that Elizabeth Eltham and family lived in.

Hi

I just read your first posting, and nearly sent you a reply saying these 'might be' my Honey family. Then I saw your second posting and now I can say 'yes they are'.

George Honey would be my ancestor George Christopher Honey. Ann Honey (his widow) was born Ann Bowles. A lot of the family lived in Grove Street.

Would you be able to send me copies/scans of these reports? I will send you a pm with my email.

Do you have any connection to these people yourself?

Many thanks and I look forward to reading these.

The Honeys were always in trouble it seems lol!

Matt

I have connection to the Eltham family. Thomas Eltham, husband of Elizabeth and father to these delinquent children was the brother of my great grandfather. I don't think I have any family connection to the Honeys although it is evident the two families are partners in crime!

The newspaper images are from a commercial source and the T and Cs state that downloads are for personal use, so I'm not sure whether I can send them to a third party. Although since the reports also name my own relatives, I have primarily downloaded them for my own use, several some years ago.

FindMyPast often has free days or £1 for a month sub.
