Francis Herbert SNELL
« on: Thursday 07 January 16 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for info on the above.  He was a Collier.  He married Esther Ann Beddoe, Oct 1884 in Pontypridd.  They had a daughter Eveline who was born 12 Oct 1885 in Pontypridd, she was baptised there on 19 July 1892.

Esther was born 1854 in Pembrokeshire. In 1901 Census she was in the workhouse in Pontypridd listed as a Widow of a Collier.  In 1891 Census she was living with Cornelius Woodward in Pontypridd, her daughter Eveline was with her, Esther Ann was listed as the daughter of Cornelius, but I have parents for her.

In 1901 Census the daughter Eveline was an Inmate of The Home of the Good Shepherd, Oystermouth.  In 1911 Census she was a Patient of Asylum at Caerleon, Newport, Monmouthshire.

I can find no records for Francis Herbert Snell apart from his marriage.  There is a possible death for him in 1892 Cardiff.  Esther Ann died Jan 1906 in Pontypridd.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Susie

What does the marriage certificate tell you about Francis - his age (if stated), & name & occupation of his father?

Have you traced the witnesses to the marriage?

What are the details of the possible death?  I can see a Herbert Snell death aged 0 in Cardiff in Sep qtr 1892, but that's obviously not him.  See www.freebmd.org.uk.

There's one in Hampshire - Francis Herbert Snell age 32 in Dec 1895.

Doesn't seem too likely but he could have left Wales for work or other reasons.  If we could find an age for yours it would help narrow it down.

Hi

Thanks for all the replies

In 1891 Census she is listed as married, I haven't sent for the marriage record.  The death I found was for Herbert Snell in Cardiff 1892, it was from Family Search, it didn't give an age.

Thanks

Susie

This one is traceable - born Axminster, Devon in 1863, married Rose Hannah Carter in Christchurch, Hants in 1890, appears with her in Christchurch in 1891 (Frank - labourer - and Rose Snell), she is widowed by 1901 and living in South Stoneham district where his death was registered.

it's Esther who is listed as Cornelius' daughter in 1891, and Eveline as her grand daughter, but I can find no evidence to back this up. To the contrary given Cornelius' previous, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a different relationship. he was imprisoned in 1874 after deserting his wife and 6 children in Derby and leaving them to fall upon the parish. He had by then shacked up with Mary Ann Parry, a 16 yr old barmaid from Abergavenny and later had three children by her.  She left in 1885, suing for maintenance.

maybe Cornelius and Esther got together, and Mr Snell left, or he deserted Esther and she found another man.

I think Eveline may have been disabled from birth, if that is her in Caerleon in 1911

Esther is Cornelius' executor when he dies in 1892. She is described there as wife of Francis Herbert Snell, so theoretically he's still alive
