Southwram 3 Womersley Passage 1881
« on: Saturday 09 January 16 03:56 GMT (UK) »
I have the 1881 census and I believe it shows my great grandfather at #3 Womersley's Passage with family members.
Mary McDonald - Auntiant ????
Mary McDonald - daughter
James McDonald -relative
I do not find any of them else where so what I am trying to do is find further information, does anyone have any suggestions.
James Wilbert McDonald born Dublin abt 1874, shipped from England 1884 to Canada by the "Nuns" is what family history claims.  No one in the Catholic records seems to match. Father  Patrick McD, mother Rose Ann McCraghan after 1900 the name is spelled McDonnell. I can not find him on the ships lists. In 1930 James was a gangster in Detroit and his son Frank was AL Capone's bodyguard / chauffer. Thanks for any help or directions you can provide. Kelly McDonnell, Calgary Alberta Canada.

Mary McDonald - Auntiant ????

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

It doesn't move your search forward, but Mary would be described as "annuitant" - in other words she was receiving an annuity (or pension).

All the best
Philip

My apologies, but I can't readily see the 1881 entry for this McDonald family.  If you have the entry in 1881, then it will give ages for Mary, James, Mary and James.  And as philipsearching suggests, the entry would be "Annuitant" meaning a pensioner of some description - not necessarily "old".  She would be receiving an income from somewhere other than an "occupation".

Ah, ha!  Found it - she is 54!!!  So she is receiving an income from somewhere!

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
