Mary McLeary / Ellis / Postle - Hull
« on: Saturday 09 January 16 17:09 GMT (UK) »
My great granny has been causing me headaches for years.  I know that she married EE Postle in Hull on 27/12/1937 (she was marked as a widow her father named as John McLeary, a rullyman)and I have a fair amount of info about her after this date up to her death in 1963.

I have her on the 1939 Register and prior to that I have on my granny's birth cert as Mary Ellis and the father of the child as William Ellis.  On the birth cert for my great-aunt, the father's name is Charles Ellis.  No luck on the 1911 census.

I was always told that she came from Ireland originally and that there was a Liverpool connection.  I found a marriage for a William Ellis  and Mary Mcleary in Salford but the ages didn't add up.

Any thought or pointers would be really welcome.

Looking at John McLeary's occupation as rullyman, it's something to do with the railways, there is the following family on 1881 Census, which also has a Liverpool/Irish connection that's a posiibility:

57, Howe St Cellar, Everton, West Derby

John    Mc Leary Married born 1840 Scotland,Railway Porter
Annie Mc Leary, wife born1844 Ireland
Maud Mc Leary born 1870 Liverpool
Jessie Mc Leary    born1873 Liverpool
John    Mc Leary  born 1876 Liverpool
Mary    Mc Leary    born 1879    Liverpool
James Mc Leary born 1881 Liverpool

Many thanks sgf28.  I have looked at this before and I dismissed it as the birth year didn't seem right.  I had another look and I found a death of Annie McLeary in Hull and wondered whether this could be the mother of my GGmother.  I'll do a bit more digging and will consider sending for this death cert.

Best wishes

Sarah

I've now received the death cert of Annie McLeary and her death was registered by my GG mother, Mary. This is the first news I have had for 5 years of her, fixing her to an address in 1909. Would still love to know why she is nowhere in the 1911 census!!
Thanks for reading and thanks for the census tip.
