Murray Family -William and Margaret nee McCann
« on: Tuesday 12 January 16 08:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm stuck!!! Looking for information on my Great Great Grandfather William Murray and his parents.
William Murray born 1889/1890 Roscommon, died 1947 NSW, Australia.
His death cert states William Murray and Margaret McCann as his parents.
I believe William (Senior) may have passed before 1927 as Williams marriage certificate to Florence Hornery (gg grandmother) states his father as deceased.
I'm stumped, I cant find anything . I might be looking in the wrong places.
Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome CAS81

just to add to gaffy's findings and to help you get started

Marriage of William MURRAY and Margaret McCONN Feb 08 1886 – LINK to civil record reference
unfortunately the church records for Athleague do not go up to 1886 - www.nli.ie

The 1911 census states that they had 11 children
8 are listed between the two census returns
At that time you were fined for not registering a birth within three months; in your family some of the children were baptised before they were officially born! As in mine!
Also some are registered as MURRY

1.   Patrick b. March 10 1887; bap. Dec 29 1886
2.   John b. Jan 16 1888; bap. Dec 29 1887
3.   William b. c March 1889 (twin)
4.   James b. c March 1889 (twin); died Jul 26 1892 aged 3
5.   Mary Margaret b. c Feb 1892
6.   Kate Anne b. c April 1894
7.   Thomas b. c April 1895
8.   Helena b. Nov 15 1896 (registered as Eleanor) bap.  Aug 12 1896
9.   Michael b. c Aug 1898
10.   James b. May 28 1900; bap. Mar 10 1900
11.   ?

www.irishgenealogy.ie and www.familysearch.org are free sites where you can locate civil references for obtaining certificates
With the dates above you can match some of the births however MURRAY is a common name

best of luck

That's a great help. So it seems my William was a twin, how interesting.
One thing how can I be sure its my Murray family??

I'll use this though and see what I can come up with.

Thank you

I would check all that you have on your William MURRAY
Do you know when he arrived in Australia?
Did he travel with anyone?
e.g. on the 1901 census link given by gaffy there is a William and Johnny listed in 1901
they are both missing from 1911
Have you any references to other family or can you link family names?

edited to add
there is a family tree on ancestry that refers to William MURRAY who married Florence HORE on Oct 29 1927 and his parents as William MURRAY and Margaret McCONN - if not your this may be of help

All I know of Williams life prior to Australia is via his death certificate. Born Roscommon
He came to Aus abt 1908, was a roman catholic and parents were William MURRAY -farmer and Margaret MCCONN(now I have looked more closely I think it is o not a)
My grandmother and Great Uncle cant tell me much as its the typical "oh they didn't talk about that"

I have no other family names apart from his parents. I haven't found an arrival as yet.

re the tree ,that is my tree. The 1901 census seems to be a match. Ill keep researching .
