Fat Lady Info
« on: Thursday 14 January 16 10:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to find more information about a relative who travelled the Yorkshire Area fairs as a Fat Lady in the late 1800's and early 1900's. her name was Rebecca Clark but I don't know what name was used on the show front. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi lizdb, Sorry I know nothing really only remember a member of the family once referring to her another relatives funeral when I was a child (long time ago now!) The reason this has come to light is I was recalling some of my past on my blog when my wife and I travelled as Circus performers for a number of years in out younger days and Rebecca came to mind.

Hi xinia, Unfortunately not, Petulengro simply means SMITH or to be more correct BLACK_SMITH in the Romany language and any family with the surname Smith can use the title Petulengro and in the late 1930's when  my Grandfather became a household name through his broadcasts on the BBC and becoming one of the first newspaper astrologers many gypsies hopped on the band wagon and change from whatever name they were working under to 'Petulengro'. You can see some of my family history on my website at: www.petulengro.com

Hi Paul,
My name is rebecca and I am from the james family. My great great grandmother was called rebecca smith james once she married , I can't seem to find any information about her not even her parents. If I'm right then you are a smith ? If so do you have any Rebeccas who would have had children and been travelling in the 1900s  ?

Hi Rebecca,
Yes I'm a Smith but unfortunately the only Rebecca I know in the family had no children. She married into the Clarke family who were from Whitehaven in Cumbria and it would have been from this family the 'Fat Lady' I was enquiring about came from.
