Does anyone possibly have a photo of William Walter Giffard Tate (1863-1946), who played 1st class cricket for Somerset before WWI?    Thank you :)

Have you contacted the club, they might have something in their archives?

I wonder  if it might be worth while contacting the Sydney Morning Herald? See below:-

Walter William Giffard Tate (27 August 1863 – 29 December 1946) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset in 1882.[1] He was born in Axminster, Devon; legal notices in the Sydney Morning Herald of 18 April 1947 indicate a "William Walter Giffard Tate" died at Randwick, Sydney, Australia on 29 December 1946 and the authoritative cricket website CricketArchive has identified this as the same person.[2] (from Wikipedia)

The paper's online archives only start from 1955 but perhaps you could contact them and see if they can help re a photo of Walter.  Contact details below:-

On the Australian Ancestry website Walter is part of someone's tree.  Be aware that he is referred to as William Walter not Walter etc.

If you are able to access the Australian Ancestry you may be able to contact the owner of the tree and ask about any photos.  If not pm me and I'll see what I can do for you.

The birth record of September 1863 shows the names as Walter William Giffard TATE.

Edit - Just realised that you are in Australia! If you are not the owner of the tree then you can try getting in contact.

If you are, have you traced any descendants from Walter's siblings?  Have you considered putting this appeal on the Australian section of Rootschat?

2nd Edit - Been having a poke about on Find My Past and found that Walter known as William had seven siblings.  Dad Francis died in 1867.  Francis married Emma GIFFARD in 1848.  So there is quite some potential for descendants who may have a photo!!

At least two other siblings seem to be referred to by one of their other names - Francis/Alban, Hannah/Maud.  All the family are on the 1861 census in Axminster, Devon except for Walter/William.

Eureka! I have finally found a photo in a South Australian newspaper from 1924. A bit grainy, naturally, but should scrub up alright. :) Thanks again everyone for your help.

That's great news.  May I be terribly nosey and ask which paper you found it in and when in 1924?
