1841 Census look up please
« on: Saturday 16 January 16 00:39 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to find Mordecai or Marcus HYMAN on this census, have tried all ways I can think of to find him but he remains elusive as ever. He has a married daughter (POSWILLO) on the Gravesend census but no 90 year old father listed with her family.  Given his age at census time wouldn't expect him to have travelled far from home.
He died 2 July 1846, High St Chatham age 95 years and occupation Surgeon.  Death reported by Jehiel PHILLIPS who on 1851 census was "Rabbi to the Jewish Congregation"
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Even a search of just first name of Mordecai or Marcus doesn't show anything likely. I realize his age, but could he have been in Europe?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

I wonder if he is the Dr Hyman living in King Street, Rochester, occupation Doctor, born in Foreign Parts. His age looks like 80, but it might have been overwritten.

1841 - HO107/491/5 fol 17 p 27

Ancestry don't appear to have indexed him at all. FindMyPast have him as D. Hyman.

Interesting. I type in Rochester, Kent, and get "no matches found". Is it possible that Ancestry don't have Rochester in the 1841 census?

Edit: I typed in Rochester, Kent and got hits for Cathedral Church, which is Rochester.

It seems Ancestry only has the Cathedral precinct of Rochester, a mere 4 images.

Dr Hyman is on A**y.  They have deemed the "Dr" to be a "ditto" and misread the surname. So

The age of "Carolene THOMAN"  ;) does look like 80 but agree it could also have been overwritten from originally being 80, or from something else to 80!! This is the full household:

Parish of St Margaret, Kent
Piece/491/Folio 17, Page 27 (Book 5)
Edward AUSTEN 50 Mariner - Y
Ann AUSTEN 50 - Y
Robert AUSTEN 15, Mariner - Y
Caroline AUSTEN 20 - Y
/
Dr HYMAN 80?, Doctor - F
John STRICKLAND 20 - Backmaker(?) - Y
Jane STRICKLAND 20 - Y
Thomas MARTON 40, Sadler - Y
Jane MARTON 20 - I

Cheers

Well done, Ambly. I am a bit perplexed by their search engine though.
