Brick wall - Fenwick Bruce
« on: Sunday 17 January 16 11:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

This is one of my biggest brick walls, my 5th great-grandfather Fenwick Bruce. He married Mary Ann Campbell in Whitby on 3rd September 1817 and I can't find anything on him before or after this, apart from the baptisms of 2 sons. William Bruce (my 4th gt-gf) baptised 24 May 1818 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, and 2nd son Fenwick Bruce baptised 12th November 1820 in Scarborough. I also can't find anything at all on this Fenwick Bruce either.

I don't know where Fenwick was born, maybe the north east of England or possibly Scotland but this is just a guess really.

Completely baffled, it's like he doesn't exist before 1817 and after 1820!

Welcome to Rootschat :)

I see that Fenwick senior was a mariner according to the 1820 baptism, which fits with the places found for him.

What course did William's life take - where and when did he marry, and did his marriage certificate record his father Fenwick as deceased?

It looks like William married Dorothy Palliser in North Yorks in 1842 - is that right?

The two of them are together pre-marriage in Masham in the 1841 census.  I was hoping to find William with family members but not so!

Have you traced anything about his mother Mary Ann after 1820?

Hi and thanks  :)

I haven't been able to find anything else on Mary Ann or Fenwick, after the 1820 baptism.

Yes, William Bruce married Dorothy Palliser in 1842. Unfortunately I don't have the marriage certificate and the England Select Marriages record doesn't name their fathers. Might need to send off for the cert at some point, if it could help!

William and Dorothy had 9 children, the eldest Frederick Palliser Bruce (1845-1893) is my ancestor. Their youngest was Charles Fenwick Bruce (1865-1939). The family lived in Masham where William worked as a woolcomber (1851), hay(?) dealer (1861), licensed pedlar (1871), licensed general dealer (1881 and 1891).

This is about all I've got on William so far  :)

Hi Lydia,
Did you get anywhere with your search for Fenwick Bruce? He is an ancestor of mine too through his son William and then through his son Robert. I think from a census return that he was born in South Shields.
