Hi Pat only that he died in the Oct/ Dec qtr 1850 in Free BMD vol7 page 19, which I'm sure you have already. L.D.S have a burial on 15.12.1850 at Holy Trinity Gosport.
I hope this is of some help.

Have you got a copy of the death certificate. That should give you an age at death so you can work out likely year of birth. You could also be lucky and have a family member as informant. He should be somewhere on the 1841 census. The death cert should also give you his occupation, which should help narrow down the right James Campbell in 1841.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Sorry but I have so many James Campbells that I could buy certificates for and I am just trying to narrow it down and discount people.  Thanks for your help.
