Lunacy Asylum, Colney?
« on: Tuesday 19 January 16 20:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

I have recently come across a lunacy asylum record for my relation, Rose Murrell.  It says the following ...

Name: Rose Murell
Gender: Female
Admission Date: 4 Jan 1879
Institution: Colney
Intitution Place: Norfolk, England
Death Date: 13 Feb 1909
Death Place: Norfolk, England

Does anyone know where the Colney Institution was/is? I've tried to google it but didn't get anywhere.

I know she was living in Hellesdon, so I wonder if she may of died in Hellesdon Hospital?

Thank you.

I think Ancestry is leading you a little astray with the reference to Norfolk and she's in Colney Hatch asylum (later known as Friern Hospital) in Barnet, London.

In 1881 the patients are noted by their initials - there are a number of RMs

To complement this there's an entry in the Bethnal Green workhouse admission registers for a ROse Murrell b 1851, admitted 30 Dec 1878 died 13 Feb 1909

Scrolling back a page in the images this is clearly a list of individuals the parish places in Colney Hatch

Try Hertfordshire, London Colney?

Rose Murrell
Death Registration Q1   1909
Age 58
Barnet Vol    3a, p253

I've had a look through the various workhouse records and nothing helpful. Frustratingly there's an entry for a Murrell in the creed records admitted on the same date, but the page is folded over. first name could be Edw..

This is another case of Ancestry randomly allocating counties. If you look at the actual image, there is no reference to any county (for this or any of the records). It just says "Colney".
As others have mentioned, this is Colney Hatch Asylum (later Friern Barnet Hospital, now luxury flats, home to pop stars and footballers!!! - google Friern Hospital).
The records on Ancestry are just the Admission Register, compiled by the Lunatic Commision, and give only minimal information. The actual patient records are not online and are held at LMA - I am going there in a couple of weeks to view the record for one of mine that spent a short while at Colney (about 20 years earlier than Rose).
Some later records are still closed (100 year "rule" and all that), but you should be OK on that front (unless she is within a batch that continues on past 1916). If you are lucky, later ones that are open sometimes include a photo.

Thank you everyone.

I think because it says 'Colney' and 'Norfolk' I just assumed that it would be in Colney, Norfolk lol.

I think that may be a different Rose Murrell. My relative died Dec quarter 1909.

Thank you all again!
