WW2 Royal Army Service Corp - Service Records
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 15:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi! All. I recently got hold of a cousins WW2 Royal Army Service Corp - Service Records. I have transcribed the info for the pages I have been sent. Although, this one particular page has stalled me. As I do not have much Military knowledge. I was wondering if someone could help me with this page as I am struggling to understand what the handwriting means etc... Thank You

AF B102 is Army Form B 102 on which are condensed details of postings/training/promotions/casualties and the like.  Dates are self evident.  Remainder is :
6 Training Battalion (rank) Private
6 Training Battalion Driver in Command Class III (qualified as) Driver
913 (Mixed) Anti-Aircraft Company (she would here have been one of the RASC drivers attached to a Royal Artillery Unit)
299 General Transport Company (or 399???)
96 Divisional Issue Depot
Embarked [for] North West Europe ((France at that date)
Cable from (references) Killed (SW – not sure) Head injury, Accident cause (?) not yet known
Telegram from 2nd Echelon (references)  Amend to read cause accidental injury whilst riding motor cycle.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

alanmack - you are absolutely right - had it correct on my draft and took it across to the reply wrongly.  Thanks for correcting it.  Sorry Coolbreeze to make up for it, 96 DID was part of the 3rd Infantry Division logistic tail, as was 299 Gen Tpt Coy.

Thank You people loads..  It  says he died from a (SW) head injury but was later revised as an head injury caused by a motor cycle accident.  His death certificate and the family reported it in the local newspaper as a head injury from a motorcycle accident.  With the word accident used does this mean it was literary and accident and not death caused by the enermy.  I visited his grave in evere nesr brussells so would he of died from his injury at this locstion.  Id like to try and find out more as to how and why he was in thst area...

Further research shows that in the initial notation of his death, SW means Shell (or shrapnel) Wound.  Thus it was first reported that his death was caused by hostile action.  I do think however that the later amendment does mean he died as the result of a road accident.  The different reports could simply have been due to an administrative mistake.

Brussels had been liberated by early September 1944 and certainly by December the allied armies were well beyond Brussels to the east although there was fierce fighting in the Ardennes well south of Brussels. My guess is that he had his unfortunate accident in an area that at the time was firmly in allied hands.  I am uncertain as to whether he was still serving with 96 DID in France but if he was, then finding out where they were in Dec 44 would help.  More expert investigation need there I think.

You might want to look in these war diaries. I'm wondering if one of the first two is a typo

WO 171/2429 299 General Transport Company 1944 Jan-Dec
WO 171/2454 399 General Transport Company 1944 Jan-Dec

WO 171/2117 96 D.I.D. 1944 Jan-Apr, Jun-Dec

Cheers
Andy
