DE GREY shields
« on: Thursday 21 January 16 22:42 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help identify the various shields of the de Grey family found in Shirland Church, Derbyshire.  The original de Grey shield is represented and then various forms of it, but many others that are very different.

All help appreciated.

Mogs Hubby.

Found this as a description of St Leonard's, Shirland:

... in the north chancel wall is a fine monumental recess, partly of alabaster, adorned with twenty-one mutilated escutcheons, the whole being within an ogee arch with cinquefoil cuspings, beneath which there once lay the effigy of a knight in armour; this monument certainly belonged to the Greys, and the figure is conjectured to have represented Sir Henry de Gray, 5th Baron Grey de Wilton, ob.1396.

If they're mutilated, it will be difficult to identify them!
Does the church itself have anything?

The 6th escutcheon could be that of Bassett?
Or, three piles in point gules, a canton ermine

The 5th is possibly Saunders?
Party per Fess indented Or and Azure

Thanks for this, that's two at least we can talk about.  I know the Bassett's were related to de Grey and I will look for Saunders to see if they occur.

A family tree might shed some light actually, lets see what I can find.

Thanks,

Mogs Hubby.

The 4th looks to be the usual De Grey shield (barry argent & azure), but with a label of 5 points.
This usually denotes the eldest son of an eldest son.

John de Grey, 2nd Baron Grey de Rotherfield KG was a founding member of the Order of the Garter, and his coat of arms is usually shows as de Grey with a bend gules (i.e a red diagonal stripe).
Could that be his shield as no. 2?

Agree 1 & 2.
4, with the label of five gules, became the arms of the Baron Grey of Wilton branch.
I also identify 6 as Basset.
I'd suggest that 7 could be Ufford (sable a cross engrailed or). Cecily Ufford m. John Willoughby, 3rd Baron Eresby.

No 3 has got me puzzled for now. It looks like a bend cotised between two lions, but I cannot find a coat like that. There is a superficial similarity to Bohun (azure, a bend cotised between six lions) and there is an example of Bohun being shown with only two lions but only because the item concerned was very small !  It would hardly apply in this case.

No's 8,9, and 10 are a bit too indistinct to identify from the photo.

With regard to No 5 : the arms shown with the Wikipedia entry for William Grey, 13th Baron Grey de Wilton include, quartered with Grey, "argent a chief indented azure". These seem to have been used by several families at different times :  Burton of Rutland and Glanville of Wiltshire, possibly also Burton, but a study of the Grey family may show which it is.
Baron (of Blackburn), Chadwick (Oswaldtwistle), Watkins (Swansea), Jones (x3 Swansea), Colton (Shropshire), Knight (Shropshire/Montgomery) , Bullen (Norfolk), White (Dorset)

The following genealogy may be of help.

Henry de Grey first held Shirland and he died in 1219. His eldest son Richard held Codnor, 2nd son John held Shirland (by Barony) and 3rd son William held Sandiacre.

Shirland owed service to Codnor Castle, but was held by John de Grey from 1243 in his own right.

John married 3 times, 1. Emma de Glanville, 2. Emma de Cauz, 3. Joanna widow of Paulinus Peiure.

By his first wife he had Reginald his son and heir, who inherited Wilton on the Welsh Marches.
