family of George O Neill of Killough
« on: Thursday 21 January 16 23:39 GMT (UK) »
I am looking to find anyone connected with the family of George O Neill who recorded in the 1901 census living at Fishermans Row Killough, he is 69, and a widower, and a car owner.
My interest in George O Neill and his family is to see if he might be the father of a Susan O Neill, who I am researching.
In 1888 Susan O Neill married a man called William Carr in the parish of Glendalough Co Wicklow. It is known that Susan was from Co Down, and her marriage record gives her parents as George and Mary/Maria O Neill.
It was thought that her connection was from Warrenpoint - and I have previously posted on this sight looking for a Warrenpoint George O Neill, but I have just discovered the Church register for her marriage gives parents address as Killough Co Down.

So I am wondering if George O Neill in 1901 census could be her father.
I know there may have been more than one George O Neill in Killough, but looking through church records I have found possible records connected to George:

1857  Mary Anne O Neill Killough born to George O Neill and Mary Kearney
1864  George O Neill (widower) Killough marries Catherine Carr Ballyvasten
1879  Mary Anne O Neill Killough daughter of George O Neill, car owner, marries James Cunningham, Kilkeel seaman.

Marriage certificates (civil) list residence of bride and groom at the time of the marriage which may not be where the parents lived).

Continuation of last post (sent too soon)
1880  James Cunningham and Mary Anne O Neill had daughter Catherine Ann 1880 Killough

1883  John O Neill, Sailor, living in Belfast, son of George O Neill car owner married Sarah Mc Cormack of Killough. Sarah Mc Cormack was witness for Mary Anne O Neill's wedding and sponsor at her child's christening.

John and Sarah O Neill had following children
1884 Mary, 1888 Ellen, 1891 Susanna, 1899 George, the family are living in Belfast in 1901 and 1911 census.

I am wondering if Susan O Neill who married in Wicklow in 1888 could possibly be a sister of Mary Anne and John O Neill. I have not found a baptism record to match Susan, but did not find one for the John O Neill above either.

Agadowey, thanks for your reply.
The link to the previous post is unfortunately my own previous post from some time back, when I thought Susan may have had  a Warrenpoint connection, I have just discovered the  possible Killough connection.
When Susan married she was living in Co Wicklow at the time and her address there was recorded, it was her parents, George and Mary O Neill, who's  address  was recorded in the church register as Killough Co Down.

Thanks very much for those searches and links etc, I will try and follow up on any I have not tried already.
Yes I as wondering if any connection between Susan marrying William Carr in Wicklow in 1888, and her "possible" step mother Catherine Carr who married George O Neill in Killough in 1864
I have previously researched Susan's husband - William Carr's family, and they go back to early 1800s, at least, in Wicklow. But perhaps they might have come from Co. Down originally.
Nor did I did find any likely Catherine Carr, daughter of a William Carr in Wicklow who might have ended up in Killough in 1864.
Someone asked why Susan O Neill from Down might have been in Glendalough/Roundwood area of Wicklow in 1888, only oral family history passed down is that she may have come to look after two elderly female relatives called White living in the area. I have tried to check out the possible White connections but could not find any likely connection.

Not sure when Susan O Neill came to the Glendalough area, but she was there in 1886, two years before her marriage.
