Guy, thank you so much. You are brilliant. This post has been a learning curve for which I am grateful.

Since starting my research  2 years ago I have learned so much. Unlike school learning I have enjoyed it immensely, because I am interested. I want to learn, not I have too!!!

You have helped me many times and I appreciate it more than I can say.

Following on from this.  Is it possible from the scant address I have to find Grandparents on an Electoral Register around 1950-1958?  I thought I was onto a winner on one site but year only went up to 1939.

Any tips appreciated :).

Jane

Just picked up the Family Tree Magazine for December 2015 ( Library Edition) page 56 has an article on  the prefab housing used after the war. This was based on a book by Elisabeth Blanchet 'Prefab Homes' ( Shire Publication 2014)

Either find the book or head to a library or back order the magazine. Interesting reading:)

As you probably know by now prefabs were small concrete bungalows built to last just a few years around the war. I used to travel past lots of them by bus on the Hinckley Rd on the way to work in Leicester in the 1960s and although I left the area in 1968 they were still there at that time. Many of their residents loved them and lamented when they were finally slated for demolition many years after they were supposed to have lasted.

Probably goes to show that it is communities that matter and that modern high rise living was never likely to be a good alternative.

Hello there,

Does anyone remember the prefabs in Glen Parva, largely around Hillsborough Road and at the end of Grange Drive?

My Dad was brought up in one with his two brothers on Swinford Avenue. Would like to know a bit more about them.

Thanks in advance,

John.
