Derrya/Shrubbywood
« on: Friday 22 January 16 20:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,
I have  a John Gilmore in Griffiths Valuation as a tenant in the townland of DERRYA, Parish of Mayne. Could anybody give me some info on this place? I am also interested in how it was generally pronounced. The reason I ask about pronunciation, is because I have found the gravestone for a Patrick Gilmore, d. Randolph, Massachusetts (1851), whom I believe to have been the nephew of aforementioned John (John, incidentally, may be my 4th great grandfather). Inscribed on the stone is the following:
"A native of DIRAH, County of Westmeath, Ireland." I have several records indicating my Gilmores (and Gegans) to have emigrated from Coole, Mayne to North Bridgewater, Mass. This latest "matchup" between DERRYA on Griffith's and DIRAH on Patrick's stone may firm up that possibility.
Thanks!

I think the pronunciation question is solved. I just had another look at the spelling on the Tithe Applotment Books, which has it as DYRA, very similar to DIRAH.

Hi,
If you type in on search/google
Derrya Westmeath map
Where is says "townland" on the results click into it and you will see the area.
It's nearest town is Castlepollard. Zoom out slowly and look south, you will see Mullingar, this is the county town of Westmeath.
Need any help just send a message.
