John WHITEHEAD, born London 1824
« on: Saturday 23 January 16 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search cite against 1864/5090 the death of John WHITEHEAD aged 40 years......this may be the same person quoted in the caption.   He originally arrived in NZ (Auckland) as a FREE IMMIGRANT from Parkhurst Prison via the "St. George" in 1842.  There were inquest proceedings carried out by the Coroner at Papakura on 22/02/1864 but I have not been able to trace these from the NZ Archives.  Is anyone able to help please.?  Papers Past has details which are relevant but I need to confirm these with the Archives.

Incidentally, I hold details of a letter written by his brother Stephen WHITEHEAD on 26/11/1853 from 333 George Street, SYDNEY, NSW to the NZ Colonial Secretary enquiring about John's whereabouts.   The response was fairly negative, suggesting that he was last heard of in Wellington in 1846.

If anyone can help with details of the inquest, or his life from 1842/1846/1864, would be marvellous. 8)

For the moment,

Tony

Do you have an occupation for him or his brother, we may be able to pick them up on the 1841 census?

Jennifer,

John was designated a "shoemaker" according to Parkhurst Prison, where he was an inmate at the 1841 Census.   Stephen WHITEHEAD has not really been part of my research, except the NSW letter came from a firm of "Photograph Artists" at 333 George Street, Sydney.

For now,

Tony
