Can't figure out the town in Surrey
« on: Saturday 23 January 16 16:37 GMT (UK) »
According to the 1861 England Census, my ancestor was born in Surrey in a town that looks something like Chaishation. Any ideas what it could be?

Er maybe? It really looks like it starts with a "Ch" but I've been doing this long enough not to trust anyone's spelling. Thanks.

The listing is in the 1861 England Census for Woolwich, Kent. My 2nd great grandfather and his family are noted there. Most of the family were born in various areas around Kent, his brother was born in Middlesex, and he was born in Surrey. The person transcribing the census apparently gave up on trying to figure out the town and just listed his birthplace as Surrey, England.

I agree most likely Carshalton - Surrey is spelt wrong as well - and it is my understanding that the enumerator copied these sheets from ones filled in by the householders. Any place of birth listed in 1851 or 1871?

My guy was born in 1858 and by 1871 was in America. I'm thrilled to have gotten this far. Findmypast.com is having a free weekend and I'm having a field day (during a blizzard).

Great stuff, make the most of it - the free weekend that is  ;). How much snow do you have and whereabouts are you?

Have you found his baptism? If you want any help, post his name.
