I'm in Connecticut. We only have a few inches at this point, so no big deal for New England.
My guy born in Surrey was James (Jesse) Wood, born in 1858 (according to the census), son of Samuel Wood and Frances Rose Wood. Samuel was a chairmaker from Doddington, Kent. Jesse ended up as a chairmaker also, and did well for himself when the family moved to Brooklyn, NY.

This may well be his birth registration - Carshalton came under Croydon registration district before 1933

Thanks. I've got a number of BMD's to check through the GRO. I'll add this one to the list.

This looks like it could be him

St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich baptism
1858 Oct 17, Jesse, s/o Samuel and Frances WOOD, No 2 Chapel Street, Chairmaker, born Aug 27.

Ancestry have a lot of Surrey baptisms, marriages and burials from Parish Registers, as well as London. The Woolwich ones come under London. If you are not a subscriber your library might have the Library edition.

Thanks Ian,

I don't seem to be able to replicate your search. Were you looking under Woolwich in Kent, Surrey, or London?

I only have access to the US version of Ancestry and Findmypast. This weekend FindMyPast has open access so I've been pulling everything I can find. FHL also has a lot of good UK information, you just have to know where to dig. Unfortunately, my local library doesn't have international access to Ancestry either.

Any other ideas where to check?

Warmest regards from the middle of the blizzard - Merrill

Woolwich back then was in Kent, but at some time became part of Greater London. Some of the Kent PRs from the Woolwich area are held at the London Metropolitan Archives, which have almost all been digitised and made available on Ancestry under London Records.

Frances Rose came from Maidstone in Kent. I think their records are available on FindMyPast, and part of the Canterbury Archives collection.

Thank you Carol.

And thank you everyone one else on helping with my first foray into UK genealogy. If anyone needs help with the state of New York, I've got 400 years of family history there. - Merrill
