Leith Marriage - Mary HALL and Edward ALLISON/ALLWINTON
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 01:14 GMT (UK) »
My 2nd great Uncle, Edward Hutchinson ALLISON supposedly married Mary HALL in Leith on 9 July 1887.  I say supposedly because it appears he was already married to one Ann (nee MORRISON) at the time.  Edward and Mary travelled to Antwerp sometime in 1888, where on 14 July, they departed for Melbourne, Australia on the ship "Hohenzollern" as Edward & Mary ALLWINTON.
The marriage date comes from the Birth Certificate of their son, Leslie Hall ALLWINTON.   I've looked on Scotland's People under Edward ALLISON and ALLWINTON, as well as Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeReg, FamilySearch.   I cannot find any evidence of this marriage so any help would be much appreciated.

Nope not married in Scotland, these are the only 3 Allison>Hall or Morrison marriages 1855-1890 from Scotland's People.  Did you look to the south?

1874 ALLISON ALLAN HALL JANET ABBEY LANDWARD /RENFREW
1873 ALLISON JAMES MORRISON MARIA PAISLEY BURGH PARISHES /RENFREW
1881 ALLISON WILLIAM MORRISON MARY ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

I don't see any Allwinton marriages in Scotland 1855-1900.  That being said, its a name I have never heard of before, so I turned to my trusty Google machine and it appears to be an Australian name.

Hi dandy10 & DonM,

Found a marriage for Edward Hutchison Allison to Ann Morrison on FreeBMD, in September, 1874 in Sunderland Vol 10a page 843. So he was married prior to his supposed marriage in 1887.

I checked FreeBMD for marriages contains Edward Allison and Mary Hall, no results, then checked Edward Allison only, but could not get one with name similar to Mary Hall. If he got married again, he nay have used false names, but cannot see the second marriage in Scotland or England.

dendy10, welcome to RC  :)

As Don and Tom mention. no obvious marriage so far for Edward and Mary. Confirmation really of what you mention:

www.geni.com/people/Edward-Allison-Allwinton/6000000036823062249

Where was Mary Hall from (parents' names etc) ?

The marriage for Edward and Mary might have been an 'irregular' marriage, not all recorded. Lots of sources for this as background. One here for example, www.gla.ac.uk/schools/socialpolitical/research/economicsocialhistory/historymedicine/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/marriage/

Hi Monica,

I was wondering when passports were introduced, because would have had criminal implications to change passenger names to Allwinton.

Saw couple of trees for Edward Hutchison Allison/Allwinton on Family Rese`rich, but no certificates for Mary Hall marriage, one tree mentions it in Leith, but I am not convinced.

I think the marriage ref, from what dendy mentions, is from Leslie Hall ALLWINTON birth cert in Australia (like Scotland, were parents' marriage in included?).  Certainly confirmation of a marriage to match is a problem  :-\

Hi Monica and all,

On "FindMyPast" free search weekend, I have found them on passenger list, as Edward and Mary Allwinton, he was 38 and Mary was 23, but gives you no place of residence or embarkation point.

I wonder where the ref to Antwerp comes in, Tom. Not sure it adds anything really though  :-\

Hi Monica and all,

I think the ship "Hohenzollern" sailed from Bremen, Germany to Victoria, Australia, but passenger list does not put city of Embarkation. Not sure if that would help, as you suggest.

Found him in the 1851 England census, in Whitburn Co. Durham, as a 4yo, so should have been 41 on ships passenger list not 38.
