Christopher Ambrose KEARNS, architect and Rebecca his wife
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 03:45 GMT (UK) »
I am desperately seeking information about Christopher Ambrose KEARNS & Rebecca his wife.

This is what I know, from the records.

as per an 1854 newspaper marriage notice of their daughter – “Rebecca Anna, eldest daughter of Christopher KEARNS, Esq., architect, of Anna Villa, County of Dublin”

as per an 1863 newspaper marriage notice of their daughter – “Margaret Jane, third daughter of Christopher KEARNS, Esq., architect, late of Dublin”

As per the "Southern Argus" Thursday 16 June 1881, page 2 ;
"Death. KEARNS. - On the 6th April, 1, Ranelagh Avenue, County Dublin, at an advanced age (74 years), Christopher Ambrose KEARNS, architect, of Dublin (husband of the late Mrs. KEARNS, of this town)."

unconfirmed – Christopher Ambrose KEARNS was born 25th Dec 1805 in Ireland. His death registration index says aged 80, equating to born 1801. The death notice says he was aged 74, equating to born 1807.

unconfirmed – Christopher Ambrose KEARNS married 29 Jan 1833 in Ireland to Rebecca BUNN (born 14 Jun 1810)

unconfirmed – Rebecca was born 14th Jun 1810 in Ireland.

Additional information ;
 - in 1849, Rebecca (the wife) and 2 of her children (Thomas George KEARNS born 1833 & Rebecca Anna KEARNS born 1836) migrated to South Australia.
 - in 1857, 4 additional children (Emma Maria KEARNS born 1838, Margaret Jane KEARNS born 1842, Mary Elizabeth KEARNS born 1844 & Howard Christopher KEARNS born 1845) migrated to South Australia
 - son Richard Albert KEARNS born 1841, stayed in England, was a Band Master & Music and Musical Instrument Seller, died 1883
 - unconfirmed children James Henderson KEARNS (1835-1836), Harold Gamble KEARNS (1837-1841), Jane Adelaide KEARNS (1839-1841), Sarah KEARNS (1847-1867) & Christopher KEARNS (1848-)
 - the death notice of his wife included "Dublin and New York papers please copy", possibly suggesting that Christopher Ambrose KEARNS spent time in New York?

Phew, other than spouses & descendants of the kids, this is all that I know about the couple.

Excellent, thank you. :)

Irish research is all very new to me and this has pushed me in the right direction.

I also tripped across
As per "Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720-1940" ;
"KEARNS, Christopher
Builder, of 47 Cuffe Street, Dublin, listed as such in Wilson's Dublin Directory for the years 1835 to 1837 and in the Post Office Dublin Directory for 1839 and 1844. Possibly a son of Thomas KEARNS. A Christopher KEARNS was admitted to the Dublin Society's School of Drawing in Architecture on 14 June 1814. Other persons of the same surname who attended the School were Barnaby KEARNS, admitted 5 April 1781, Charles KEARNS, admitted 1 August 1782 and James KEARNS admitted 5 November 1789."

As per "Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720-1940" ;
"KEARNS, Thomas
Builder, of 47 Cuffe Street, Dublin, listed as such in Wilson's Dublin Directory for the years 1807 to 1820. Thomas KEARNS also appears in Pigot & Co.'s City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory (1824). According to a list of brick- and stone-layers which was compiled by his fellow tradesmen in March 1834, KEARNS 'Made a property & made some Houses in Cullens wood [and] died in good circumstances about 8 years since'. His will is dated 1826. The Thomas KEARNS who appears at the same address in Wilson's directories for 1835 to 1837 and in the Post Office Directory for 1839 may have been his son. From 1835 onwards Christopher KEARNS is also listed at the same address."

Which all fits well.
