Have you looked for a marriage or death for him on Scotlands People which is a pay per view site via credits purchase

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

A quick search on the free index shows 4 matches for a death for that name in Ayr with a birthyear 1888-1890 but 31 matches if you do an all counties search.  I searched from 1911 onwards

Could he possibly have been killed in WW1 (unless you already know he survived the war)

www.cwgc.org have a lot of entries for his name but you would need to open each entry to see if any parents are shown.  Quite often it only shows his widows name and sometimes no details at all so it's difficult to confirm if it's him

There are also a lot of John Millar emigration entries with birthyears 1888/1889 depending on age at time of travel - many sailing from Scotland

If you assume he remained in Scotland after 1911 - you would need to look for his death on SP which could involve a lot of work as there are 29 possible matches between 1911-1989 with a birthyear 1888-1890

If you are successful - then his death cert will show his wife's name etc

Carole W I have looked at scotlandspeople there are 6/7 John Millars all born same year as my John who died in the Ayrshire area , but not one has his mothers maiden name or anything else to indicate that either is him :-(

You don't have any guarantees that he remained in Ayrshire so can't confine any search just to that county.

There are 29 death entries in all across Scotland and it's only after you have viewed and eliminated them all that you can move out of Scotland

England has 4 John Millar deaths with a birthyear of 1888/1889.  Prior to 1969 - death registrations did not show full birthyears so ages were treated in the same way as census birthyears - subtract age at death from year they died
www.freebmd.org.uk

It may have been easier to trace him if he had been given a middle name
